SELC D2 – What Did We Learn This Week?

Scott MacPherson is back with his “What We Learned This Week” SELC D2 post! It’s a full recap of all the SELC action, and where each team currently stands.

Northeast Division

Charleston (div. 1-1, overall 3-2) – Defeated North Florida 12-7 at home in Charleston SC
Citadel (div. 1-1 overall 2-3) – Defeated North Florida 16-8 in Charleston SC
Coastal Carolina (div. 2-0, overall 4-0) – Blasted Davidson 18-3
UNC-Charlotte (div. 0-2, overall 0-2) – 49ers game in Lynchburg Va with Liberty was postponed by weather
Wofford (div. 0-0, overall 0-1) – Opened their season with a 17-10 home loss to Appalachian State

Northeast Division Notes: There were no dramatic wins/losses in the division this weekend. UNCC’s game was postponed, so we didn’t get to see if the 49ers could rebound from their two division losses. Coastal Carolina won easily over Davidson, Charleston and Citadel defeated North Florida. Wofford opened their season with a loss. Seems to me that the second place SELC playoff slot is wide open. I’m wondering if the Citadel can make some noise in the division. Coastal Carolina is still in the drivers seat, with division UNCC and Wofford remaining on the schedule.

Northwest Division

Appalachian State (div. 0-0, overall 2-1) – Lost to Wake Forest 11-9 and defeated Wofford 17-10
Davidson (div. 0-1, overall 1-4) – Lost to Coastal Carolina 18-3
Elon (div. 0-0, overall 1-0) – Did not play
Liberty (div. 1-0, overall 1-0) – UNCC game postponed due to weather
Southern Virginia (div. 0-0, overall 0-1) – Did not play

Northwest Division Notes: Appalachian State almost took down another SELC D1 team this weekend. Wake Forest was able to defeat the Mountaineers 11-9 in Boone NC. What an interesting team Appalachian State is, getting some good early season work against SELC D1 opponents. Even though it is early, seems as though Elon, Liberty and Appalachian State are lining up for a dog fight for the two playoff spots.

Southeast Division

Florida Gulf Coast (div. 0-0, overall 1-0) – Did not play
Georgia Southern (div. 0-0, overall 1-2) – Lost at home to Tennessee Wesleyan 7-6
North Florida (div. 0-1, overall 0-5) – Lost to Charleston 12-7 and the Citadel 16-8 on the road
Palm Beach Atlantic (div. 0-0, overall 0-1) – Did not play
SCAD (div. 1-0, overall 1-1) – Lost to Clemson 14-5

Southeast Division Notes: It’s difficult to win on the road and North Florida lost two in Charleston. Georgia Southern, lost a close one. Would have been a real nice win for GSU but it slipped away. SCAD lost to Clemson, the Bee’s just tuning up for the season against D1 talent. SCAD and Palm Beach Atlantic are 1-2 in the division, as best I can tell. FGCU, need more “info”.

Southwest Division

Emory (div. 0-1, overall 0-3) – Lost to Washington-Saint Louis 20-7 at home
Kennesaw State (div. 0-0, overall 1-2) – Defeated Washington-Saint Louis 10-7 at home
Reinhardt (div. 1-0, overall 2-1) – Lost to Washington-Saint Louis 19-8 at home
Tennessee Wesleyan (div. 0-0, overall 1-1) – Defeated Georgia Southern 7-6 on the road in Statesboro GA

Southwest Division Notes: Reinhardt was unable to keep the magic following and lost an out of conference game. The Emory slide continues. Emory has given up 13-12-20 goals in their first three games. Kennesaw State got their first win of the season (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) over out of conference Washington-Saint Louis. Tennessee Wesleyan got a nice one goal victory over Georgia Southern. That win should translate well for division play. Kennesaw seems to be the class of the division, again.Emory still has time to put things back together. Is Reinhardt for real? Probably should have a report on Washington-Saint Louis!
