It’s March Madness in the MCLA

Division I

My choice for the PNCLL DI game of the week will be taking place in the beautiful city of Glendale, Arizona. The number one team in the PNCLL will be facing off against the number one team in the SLC. The number 10 ranked Clan from Simon Fraser will be taking on the number one ranked Sun Devils from Arizona State. If it weren’t for a one point loss to BYU, who is ranked number four in the nation, by Simon Fraser, both of these teams would be entering in undefeated.

Arizona State received all of the first place votes for week four, and has beaten top-ranked opponents Stanford, Chapman, Colorado State, Colorado University and Sonoma State. The Sun Devils definitely have the most impressive resume in the MCLA and are 3-0 in games decided by three points or less, so its apparent that Coach Malone has a very skilled, discipline team.

Simon Fraser is 7-1 with many impressive PNCLL wins under their belt, including a 15 to 5 victory over the University of Oregon Ducks. They are also home to Darren Zwack, who is one of the best goalies in the MCLA with a 69% save percentage.

Each team has played eight games thus far. Simon Fraser has scored more points this season with 122, while Arizona State has allowed fewer points at only 46. Most of the two teams’ stats match-up very evenly, but Arizona State has had a much harder schedule. There is no way Arizona State loses this game. Simon Fraser is playing extremely well this year but even if they manage to keep it a close game, ASU has this game in the bag. Even though Simon Fraser has one of the best defenses in the PNCLL, I don’t think they will be able to stop Junior and Senior attackmen Dan Davis and Justin Straker. This big time players are easily the highest scorers on the Sun Devils’ squad, and they will lead them to victory.

Division I Projected Weekend MVP– Cooper Pickell

Division II

Utah State University Lacrosse

With many schools beginning Spring Break, there aren’t many games happening this weekend, but that doesn’t mean there will be a lack of excitement in the PNCLL DII. The College of Idaho Yotes will be taking on the number one team from the RMLC conference, Utah State. This will be a very interesting MCLA Division I versus an MCLA Division II match-up that will tell us a lot about these two teams.

Utah State is 5-1 with their only loss caused by the number 18 team in the country, Westminster. They have many leaders on the field, but the most impressive one is Sophomore midfielder Blade Garlow. This kid already has almost as many goals and more assists than he had last year. He also is very familiar with the PNCLL. Garlow led his team to victory over the Montana Grizz, scoring eight goals and assisting four.

The College of Idaho is 3-1, and is home to a very momentum driven offense. The Yotes aren’t afraid to score, and score quickly. They were able to put up 12 goals in just one quarter of play. This impressive offense is led by Dillon Green who is averaging 4.5 goals and 2.75 assists per game.

I believe that Utah State will pull away with the victory. I think that Dillon Green will still be able to put up big points for the College of Idaho, but that won’t be enough. Blade Garlow and Utah State will win, but it will definitely be a close game. Both of these teams are very different, but Utah State has a little bit more structure that will put them over the top.

Division II Projected Weekend MVP– Dillon Green

Have 38 minutes to spare? Well we strongly suggest you find some time to watch this video. We had the sincere pleasure of meeting Coach Brandon Schwind and watching the Spartans this past May in Greenville as they upset Stanford in the first round with an absolute beatdown on their way to face eventual runner-up Colorado.

Trailing the 5th ranked Chapman University Panthers by two goals, the #1 Colorado State University Rams rallied to tie the game in the last four minutes and Sean Smith stuck the game-winner with 2:43 remaining in the third overtime period to get a key out of conference victory on a cold night at the Loveland Sports Park.
