Veteran MDIA Lacrosse Coach, John Westfall, has been named the Head Lacrosse Coach of the Northern Arizona University today.
Westfall has been in organized Lacrosse for over 35 years. He is a native of Baltimore, Maryland and played as a Youth Player for Lacrosse Hall Famer Okie O’Conner at Glen Burnie Community Lacrosse. Westfall would go on to be a two time Varsity Letterman at Westminster High School in Maryland and started at CCBC Catonsville in Baltimore as a Junior College Player. Catonville would be ranked 10th in the nation.
Westfall would win the Most Improved Player Award in 1983 at Catonsville. He then would go to become the First Defensive Captain for Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. He would play the remainder of his College career at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Westfall’s Coaching career includes two stints at the University of New Mexico and helped New Mexico come into the MDIA and the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference. Westfall was named with Coach of the Year Honors at Colorado School of Mines in 1999 and Mines played in the Division 2 Championship in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference.
Westfall would also start a new Team at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina and help them enter the SELC. He would also have a brief stint at the University of South Carolina.
Coach Westfall would also become President of the ACLA which was a developmental College Lacrosse Conference in the Carolinas which would eventually lead to those programs in the ACLA to join the SELC.
Westfall would return to Liberty University in 2003 and help Liberty join the SELC. Westfall would be named SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference Division 2 Coach of the Year and would lead Liberty to a top 25 ranking in Division 2 and the Post Season in 2005.
Westfall has a combined Coaching experience of 15 years in the Collegiate Ranks and 2 as Head Coach of Sandia Prep in Albuquerque and 1 as an Assistant Coach at Sandia Prep on the High School level. Westfall helped start the Sandia Prep Team and organize High School Lacrosse in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Westfall has a Collegiate Coaching record of 107-92.
With making this move retaining John Westfall as Nothern Arizona’s Head Lacrosse Coach NAU takes one step closer to becoming a national contender.
