Editor’s note: After the success of our “Growing the Program” series last year, we knew we had to follow up with another league-wide update. So, this Fall we’re hitting the streets in search of new information about teams around the MCLA. We’re asking questions about try-outs, players to watch, team promotion, coaching changes and everything this side of the Mississippi. With that, here come our Fall Ball Reports!
Each report will feature a different MCLA team, touching on the importance of Fall Ball and anticipation of the 2012 season – which is just a few months away!
Today we’re speaking with Coach Chris Malone of Arizona State University.
MCLA Fan: How many players attended team tryouts this Fall?
Coach Malone: 70.
What is your team’s Fall practice schedule?
We practice 3 days a week from 6:45-8:45am. We are in the weight room twice a week as a team and then guys have to do a day on their own. We also have study hall twice a week.
What is your team’s Fall game/tournament schedule?
We have 3 contests this fall. Two are inner squad games and one is an Alumni game. We have decided not to travel in the fall so we could spend that travel money in the spring.
What aspect(s) of your team do you hope to most improve upon from last year?
We need to clear the ball better. Our defenders need to imrpove thier stick work. Our entire team needs to improve thier stick work but for our clearing game to improve we need our poles to be better with the ball.
Who are the top 5 players we should be paying attention to this season?
Dylan Westfall | RS Senior | Goalie | 20 | MCLA 1st Team in 2011
Ian Anderson | RS Senior | Defense | 45 | MCLA 3rd Team in 2011
Zach Mendoza | Soph | Defense | 25 | MCLA Honorable Mention in 2011
Payson Clark | Jr. | Midfield | 7 | Captain this season
Logan Quinn | Soph. | Midfeild | 17 | MCLA Honorable Mention in 2011
Have there been any changes to your coaching staff? If so, please fill us in…
We have the same staff as last season. First time since I have been here that the staff is the same.
What are you doing to promote your program on campus and in the community?
We put flyers up in the dorms and in our Student Rec Center. We will also sell merc handise on campus a couple days in the fall/winter.
What are your program’s top 3 goals for the upcoming 2012 season?
We have goals for the fall and we have goals for the spring.
1. Compete | Push the guy next to you each time you step on the field
2. Improve each day
3. Focus on one day at at time. Do not look ahead.
Thanks so much for speaking with us Coach Malone. Good luck this season!
