After going 2-2 in the SELC D1 and 6-7 overall, Alabama is continuing to move forward this year after hiring two new coaches this past off-season and obtaining a pretty tough schedule for this upcoming season. With two years under their belt in the MCLA Divisi0n 1, Alabama is continuing to get better and compete with the best of them.
Alabama will go into the 2012 season with two new coaches, Head Coach Randy Nace and Assistant Coach Michael Walker.
Head Coach Randy Nace comes from Douglassville, Pennsylvania and played for Northfield Mt. Hermon School as a goalie in high school and played for Lynchburg College (D3) from 90′-94′ also as a goalie. He has been an assistant coach at Mountain Brook High School (AL), Hoover High School (AL), and a head coach for Vestavia Hills High School (AL). At Hoover, Randy helped lead them to three Alabama state championships. As Vestavia’s Head Coach, Randy led the growing high school program to their first ever state championship appearance. In 2011, Randy was named the US Lacrosse Head Coach of the Year in the Alabama/Mississippi region.
Assistant Coach Michael Walker comes from Pennsylvania as well. He moved to San Diego and obtained most of his lacrosse experience on the West Coast. In 00′ and 01′, he was a San Diego County All-Star for Juniperro Serra High School. From there, he attended Cal State University and then Chico State University in 02′. At Chico State, Michael made the WCLL All-Conference team and helped lead Chico to a berth in the MCLA Division 1 National Tournament, where they lost in the 2nd round but were able to finish ranked #13 in the final MCLA polls.[stu alias="fivestar1"][/stu]
After his career at Chico State, Michael joined the Varsity coaching staff at Monte Vista High School in San Diego for a year in ’04 before heading out to Memphis, Tennessee for a coaching position at Collierville High School from ’05-07′. Michael spent the next three years playing for TSG Heidelberg, a German lacrosse team that competes in the Division 1 Bundesliga, while in 2009 he spent on active duty for the U.S. Army in Iraq.
As for their 2012 schedule, check it out below. Looks like the Tide will have their hands full with a 17-game schedule against some great competition.
Look for great things coming out of Tuscaloosa this year as the program at ‘Bama continues to make huge strides forward. As Striding Man would probably say here, ROLL TIDE!
