The University of Montana Men’s Lacrosse team took the field covered in some fresh powder under some sunny weather making it quite the afternoon for lacrosse. And what an afternoon it was with the Grizzlies cruising to a 21 to 5 win against the first year program, the University of Great Falls Argonauts.
The Griz were led by the attack trio of the high scoring freshman Eric Larson, the shifty shorty Kit Jeffery, and the savvy veteran JD “Cheeze” Chapman. After a first quarter score of 4 to 1 led by 2 goals apiece from Larson and Chapman, the Grizzlies poured on 13 goals in the second to secure a very comfortable lead of 17 to 2 to end the first. After some better defensive play in the second half by the Argos of UGF, the scoring was slowed down to only 4 goals by Montana and 3 goals coming for Great Falls in only the 3rd quarter.
With a final score of 21 to 5 the three Attack led Montana with a combined 18 goals, 12 assists, and 8 ground balls (Chapman 4g 2a 4gb, Larson 5g 1a 2gb, Jeffery 4g 6a 2gb). Some other contributions came from Senior Defense #26 Tevor Currie assisting JD in the 1st, and first time goals by Freshman #28 Seamus Clancy scoring on a fast break at his LSM position and a hard right dodge by Sophomore #23 Tanner Pace getting crushed on the play sacrificing for the goal.
I asked the leading scorer of Montana and one of the best in the country Eric Larson about the success of the attack this Sunday, “We worked really well together, on point, working the ball around better than we ever have.” Using today’s game as an opportunity to get better, “we worked on offense to have it for other teams.” He attributed his early career success to “quick hands and stick skills.”
I asked him about the jump he has had from high school lacrosse in Utah to MCLA, he said he came from a similar competitive background,” but it has been a jump ’cause the kids are a lot faster.” The Grizzlies are soon to be making there way down to California and Eric is looking forward to some good competition,” I’m hoping to see what I can do down there against some high caliber teams.”
