FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY MEN’S LACROSSE

Rams Earn #1 Seed at MCLA Tournament

Fort Collins, CO - 5/6/13 – On the backs of a 15-0 regular season and a fourth straight Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference title, the Colorado State Rams will enter the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association’s national tournament as the #1 seed. The Rams, who won the title in 2012, have been perched atop the MCLA polls all year and come into the tourney as the top seed for the first time since the 2006 season.

CSU will face off against the 16th seeded Purdue Boilermakers next Monday in Greenville, SC. Colorado State and Purdue have never before played and will feature several of the top playmakers in the MCLA. The Boilermakers, who rebounded from an 0-2 start to win 9 of their next 11 games, obtained a tournament berth as the automatic qualifier from the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference.

Colorado State won the automatic qualifier from the RMLC after taking down Utah 17-4 and 2nd ranked Colorado 9-6 in the conference tournament. The Rams have defeated the numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, 11, 16, and 22 teams in the MCLA on the way to their record fourth-straight conference title. This will be the 15th appearance for the Rams in the MCLA tournament, where they have advanced to 11 semifinal games and won five national championships.

Purdue dropped early season contests to North Carolina State and Clemson before suffering defeats against Wisconsin and Indiana in the regular season. The Boilermakers avenged their losses to both conference foes in the GRLC tournament, defeating Wisconsin 8-7 and the rival Hoosiers 11-10 in the championship game. Their tournament championship and appearance in the MCLA tournament are both firsts in Purdue’s history.

The Rams are led by senior attackman Austin Fisher (Rock Canyon HS / Highlands Ranch, CO), who won RMLC Offensive Player of the Year honors, and senior face-off specialist Dan Warfield (Smoky Hill HS / Aurora, CO), who is winning nearly 67% of his draws on the season. Purdue’s main scoring comes from junior Palen Rhodes, an honorable mention All-America selection in 2012, and freshman Greg Behning, who has 46 points on the season.

CSU is currently outscoring teams 12.8 to 4.3 on the season while Purdue has given up double digits only three times.
Face-off for the Rams and Boilermakers is scheduled for 4:00pm EST on Monday, May 13 in Greenville, SC at the Wenwood Soccer Complex.

Even MORE MCLA content on this fine Tuesday morning! We have a great slate of videos from around the league to showcase for you.

Great hit or big cross check? You tell us! We’re siding with the latter, his hands are a dead giveaway.

Chapman took down UCSB this past weekend and The Lacrosse Network captured all the best highlights from the game.

Our friends over at LaxxTV also sent over a great bunch of videos for us to check out. We’ll start off first with a big hit from Simon Fraser vs Oregon game a while back. The ref called it clean, but was it? Let us know what you think the call should be!

SFU vs. Oregon highlights from their early season match-up. Oregon would win 9-8, but Fraser played a great game in the process. A great match-up from both teams and a very fun game to watch.

Brigham Young vs. Stanford, a classic Utah vs Cali match-up. BYU would take the game 13-7, but Stanford would put up a good fight. A few defensive changes from Stanford’s perspective could’ve changed the game.

Dawgs Out West

This past weekend, The University of Georgia Bulldogs found themselves in the mountains of Colorado for a little fun and some great lacrosse against #1 Colorado State and #2 Colorado. The adventure that would ensue would prove to be one of the most interesting and challenging weekends of the season thus far.

On Thursday afternoon, the Dawgs flew into Denver International Airport – or most of the team did. Some of the team took later flights, and the weather did not cooperate well. Myself and three others were stuck in Atlanta until 11pm, waiting on a flight that was supposed to leave at 7pm. We finally got on the plane, only to wait another hour on the tarmac. The four of us finally arrived in our hotel rooms at 2:30am Denver time, or what seemed like 4:30am to our east coast bodies. Needless to say, we skipped out on the 8am team tour of Sports Authority Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos.

Friday brought the start of the real reason we flew all that way – a matchup with #1 Colorado State. The team was amped to get going, and it showed. Georgia jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter. Junior midfielder Conner Reed started the scoring with a fast break goal off a CSU turnover. After the Rams answered, sophomore midfielder George Walker stuck one to put the Dawgs back up. Another goal by Reed and a man up tally by senior attackman Trent Dean put UGA up 4-1. Colorado State would bounce back with a great second quarter. UGA barely touched the ball, and the Rams made it count. The score was 5-4 CSU at the half.

The third quarter started a lot like how the second quarter ended: all Rams. CSU put up three more, to bring it to a total of 7 unanswered goals. UGA finally stopped the bleeding when senior midfielder Matt Dumbleton went low-to-low for a goal. Colorado State would answer and bring the score to 9-5 to start the fourth quarter. After CSU scored another, they received a two minute, non-releasable penalty, and the Dawgs felt the momentum turning. Dean would notch his second of the day on the EMO. After a great defensive stand, Reed put his third of the day in to bring the score to 10-7 with 10 minutes left in the fourth. Colorado State would stop the rally, however, and finished the game with two goals of their own. Goalie David Lumsden had 18 saves, including several point blank stops. Faceoff specialist sophomore Harrison Cassada did great work from the x, winning 9 faceoffs.

On Saturday, UGA looked to bounce back against #2 Colorado. This was a special day for both squads, as the game was held in Colorado’s Folsom Field following the school’s football spring game. If you’ve never played in a Division 1 football stadium, I highly recommend it – it’s insanely cool. However, the shine quickly wore off for the Dawgs, as Colorado jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. Sophomore attackman Michael Trainer would bring Georgia to within 3 after scoring just before half on a beautiful pass from sophomore midfielder DJ Nuckolls. After a very sloppy first two quarters, UGA found itself within striking distance. But the second half proved to be just as much of a struggle for the Georgia offense. While the defense did a stellar job of holding the Buffs to only two goals in the third, the Colorado defense did just as good of a job holding back the Georgia offense. It looked like the altitude had finally caught up to the Dawgs, as they looked gassed for the entire fourth quarter. Trainer would add another goal in the fourth, but Colorado had the game well in hand. The final was 10-2 Buffaloes. The keeper Lumsden was once again unconscious in the net, tallying well over 20 saves for the day. Senior defensemen Brett Botto and Sean Whitney played lights out as well. I give it about five minutes after this goes live until I get texts from them saying they really didn’t play well – but don’t believe them.

While the results weren’t exactly what the Dawgs were looking for, it was a great weekend. Team trips are always a fun experience (you know what they say, what happens in Denver…). Attackman Kyle Reed and myself even got a free brownie sundae from our waitress in Boulder for our loss, so even that wasn’t completely terrible. The team learned a lot from our mistakes and from playing some great teams. It was great preparation for the playoff push. And don’t worry, my flight was only delayed an hour and half on the way back.

The Dawgs come back in state for some clean, old-fashioned hate with Georgia Tech on Saturday in Atlanta. This game not has bragging rights on the line, but a division title as well. UGA then travels out to Oxford, Mississippi for a makeup game with the Ole Miss Rebels. Keep up on all things Georgia Lacrosse through our website (www.ugalacrosse.com), Facebook page (UGA Men’s Lacrosse Team), and twitter account (@ugalax).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse

#1 CSU Battles for Tough 12-7 Victory over #21 Georgia

Fort Collins, CO - April 12, 2013 – After one quarter of play against the visiting #21 Georgia Bulldogs on Friday night, the top ranked Colorado State Rams found themselves in the unfamiliar position of trailing 4-1. But the Rams stormed back, scoring nine of the game’s next ten goals over the next 35 minutes of game time to finally put away a pesky and athletic Bulldog team 12-7 on a chilly night on campus in Fort Collins, CO.

The Bulldogs had it going on both ends of the field early in the contest as goaltender David Lumsden turned aside four very quality scoring opportunities for the Rams while his team jumped out to their first quarter lead. While Lumsden was doing his work on the defensive end, Georgia shooters were finding some creases in the CSU defense as well. Connor Reed scored twice in the opening frame for Georgia.

But the CSU offense finally broke through in the second quarter, getting kick-started by a man-up goal from senior attackman Austin Fisher (Rock Canyon HS / Highlands Ranch, CO). After Fisher’s tally, the Rams got three more goals from three different goal scorers and held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half to head into intermission with a 5-4 lead.

The Rams wasted no time in the third quarter, pounding home three straight goals in the first three minutes of the frame to push the lead out to 8-4 before Georgia stopped the bleeding on a man-up strike. But Fisher scored unassisted just 23 seconds later and senior Tim Taggart (Mountain Vista HS / Highlands Ranch, CO) followed that up with his first goal of the game to make it 10-5 Rams early in the fourth.

Georgia didn’t give up and scored twice to cut the lead to 10-7 with 10:17 to play, but the Rams got another goal from Fisher and then an unassisted strike by freshman midfielder Eric Uhl (The Masters School / Simsbury, CT) to give CSU their final cushion of 12-7.

Despite their shaky start, the CSU defense played well over the final three quarters of the game, holding the MCLA’s leading goal scorer Trent Dean to just two goals, both on extra-man chances. Reed led Georgia with three goals while Fisher had a game-high four goals. Taggart had two goals and an assist while fellow senior Dustin Grybinas (Kirkwood HS / Kirkwood, MO) continued his hot streak with two points as well.

The teams were virtually even on face-offs as CSU controlled 13 of 23 draws. The Rams outshot Georgia by a 39-22 margin and scooped up 42 groundballs to the Bulldogs’ 20, but Lumsden’s 15 saves kept UGA within striking distance right through the end. Colorado State had success on the ride, forcing nine failed clears by Georgia on the evening.

The game marked the first ever MCLA contest between the two teams. Colorado State (13-0 overall, 3-0 RMLC) will finish the regular season with two conference games, taking on New Mexico on Sunday afternoon ahead of next Saturday’s Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showdown against the #2 Colorado Buffaloes at Hughes Stadium. Georgia falls to 11-2 and will face-off against the Buffs at Folsom Field in Boulder on Saturday afternoon.

This originally was going to start as a Quick Sticks post, that was until I was scouring Twitter and saw the score of the Colorado State vs. Brigham Young. Ready for this?

Is this real life? My jaw just about hit the floor. I know for a fact that BYU is no slouch and they look forward to this game just as much, if not more, than any other game on their schedule. But 16-5? That’s a butt whoopin’ no matter how you look at it. Especially when it comes on the road for the Rams.

CSU was up 6-1 after the first quarter, 10-4 through three quarters, and then went on another 6-1 run in the 4th quarter to give them the big 16-5 win. Looks like a pretty complete game to me.

Will anyone be able to take down Colorado State this year?

Let’s start out with a couple main statistics for the Rams, as compared to the other top 5 teams in the MCLA D1

Goals Against Average

1. Colorado State – 4.6
2. Arizona State – 5.7
3. Colorado – 6.2
Chapman – 6.2
5. BYU – 7.1

Goals Per Game

1. Arizona State – 13.4
2. Colorado State – 12.6
3. Colorado – 12.4
4. BYU – 12.3
5. Chapman – 10.6

Obviously, you can make what you want of the statistics, but I feel they show a great consistency in how these teams are performing this season. Colorado State has managed to go 11-0 thus far on the season with only four games left, ending with the most important one of their regular season – the Rocky Mountain Showdown against Colorado in Fort Collins on April 20th.

No matter how you cut it though, 4.6 goals allowed a game is pretty staggering. In only three games this season have Colorado State’s opponents scored over five goals. Westminster managed to put up seven in a 14-7 loss, Simon Fraser also managed seven in a 16-7 loss, and UCSB gave the Rams a big scare and put up ten goals in an 11-10 loss in OT.

This last game, as well as a 5-4 OT win against Chapman are the most notable to me. Colorado State has shown that it can both, win with style, and win with grit. Colorado State was down 4-8 to the Gauchos before putting up a 6-2 run in the 4th quarter to force overtime. Against Chapman, it was close the whole game, with both teams matching each other point for point through four quarters.

This is the exact kind of experience you hope a team is able to get in a season, a great mix of big wins, close wins and if you have to, comeback wins. No offense to the rest of the Rams opponents, but IF someone is able to beat them in the regular season, it’s going to have to come on April 20th when they take on the Buffaloes of Boulder, Colorado.

With both Colorado State and Colorado ranked #1 and #2, this game just becomes more and more important as each teams remains undefeated throughout the season.

And getting a little lofty here, but going into the 2013 MCLA National Tournament, the only way Colorado State loses is IF someone is able to take them down in the Semis or Championship, in overtime. I can’t wait to see the brackets when they come out, maybe we’ll hold our own little May Madness Challenge.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 5, 2013

Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse

Rams Start Fast, Down #4 BYU 16-5

Provo, UT – In a rematch of last year’s MCLA semifinals, the #1 Colorado State Rams jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one quarter of play and kept the pressure on for the rest of the game en route to an impressive 16-5 victory over #4 Brigham Young on a gorgeous Friday evening in Provo, UT.

The Rams scored early and often, highlighted by a career day from Kacy Carter (Rock Canyon HS / Castle Rock, CO), who led all scorers will seven goals and two assists. Carter and fellow attackman Austin Fisher (Rock Canyon HS / Highlands Ranch, CO) combined for 11 goals while senior midfielder Tim Taggart (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, CO) also had a career-high four goals as CSU led from start to finish.

After CSU scored the first three goals of the game, BYU’s Mike Fabrizio broke the drought for the Cougars with 2:50 remaining in the first quarter. But CSU’s Dan Warfield (Smoky Hill HS / Aurora, CO) won the ensuing face-off and fed Carter for a quick answer to quell the momentum. The Rams ran off two more goals to close the first quarter out 6-1.

Fisher got a quick one in the second before BYU closed out the second quarter scoring with two goals to make the halftime lead 7-3, including a tally with less than three seconds by Jake Ferrin. But the Rams removed all drama as Taggart and Carter scored two goals early in the third to make it 9-3 and the Rams coasted from there.

Both teams found themselves in the penalty box for much of the fourth quarter with six penalties called. CSU capitalized on all four of their extra-man chances while BYU was one of two. Colorado State dominated at the face-off ‘x’ as Warfield and sophomore Brian Roach (Wheat Ridge HS / Westminster, CO) combined to go 17 of 23.

Both teams cleared the ball well, but the Rams enjoyed a healthy advantage in groundballs (44-25) and shots (32-26). CSU goaltenders combined for 10 saves while BYU’s Rob Ostler struggled, making just five saves on the afternoon. Sean Ross (Lewis Palmer HS / Monument, CO) was the only other goal scorer for CSU, while Mickell Walker led the Cougars with a goal and an assist.

The win was Colorado State’s first regular season victory in Provo since the 2005 season and pushes the Rams to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in the RMLC. They will tangle with Utah on Saturday afternoon at Juan Diego HS in Draper, UT before heading back to Fort Collins. BYU falls to 11-3 and 2-2 in the RMLC and will take on MCLA Div. II Westminster next weekend.

The Colorado State University Lacrosse Alumni Association is proud to announce their Hall of Fame class of 2013.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse

CSULAA Hall of Fame Class of 2013 Announced

Fort Collins, CO - April 1, 2013 – The Colorado State University Lacrosse Alumni Association is proud to announce their Hall of Fame class of 2013. Former Rams Pete Mottram (1996), Pat Coy (2001), Ryan Davis (2002), and Nick Stanitz-Harper (2005) have been inducted into this year’s class by the CSULAA Hall of Fame committee and will be honored on April 20 at halftime of the Rocky Mountain Lacorsse Showdown between Colorado State University and the University of Colorado. Dr. Ron Krugman has been named an honorary inductee this season for his years of service as the team chiropractor.

Pete Mottram was one of the most decorated attackmen of his time at Colorado State, who then competed in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Lacrosse League against teams like the University of Denver, Air Force, Colorado College and others. Having just missed the MCLA era, Mottram was a physical player who could get his own shot and create for others.

Pat Coy burst onto the national scene just as the MCLA was blooming into what it has become today. One of the most physical and intimidating defenders in the country during his time at CSU, Coy was a multi-year All-America and All-Conference player and helped lead the Rams to two national championships in 1999 and 2001.

Overlapping slightly with Coy, Ryan Davis was part of perhaps the most well-rounded and feared attack groups in the history of the program, lining up alongside fellow Hall of Famers Mike Roth and Mike Napolilli. A slick playmaker with a no fear attitude, Davis also graced the cover of Lacrosse Magazine after CSU won their second title in 2001. Davis currently sits at #8 all-time on the CSU modern stats list with 173.

Another offensive star, Nick Stanitz-Harper was a starter from his first day on campus at Colorado State. Playing as a midfielder early in his career before moving to attack full-time later on, Stanitz-Harper was a physical presence who could shoot the ball with velocity and accuracy. His size and strength, along with his knack for timely goals, made him a tough match-up for any defenseman as the burly right hander from Aurora, CO rang up over 200 points in his career.

Finally, the team will pay honorary tribute to Dr. Ron Krugman, who served as the team chiropractor and resident health guru for many years. “Dr. Ron” was a fixture on the sidelines for the green and gold, helping players rehabilitate from injury and just feel a little better during the long season. Thanks to Dr. Ron, Thursdays were always good days and many players benefitted from his work.

This year’s Showdown and Hall of Fame Game will be held at Hughes Stadium for the first time in MCLA history. The Rams and Buffaloes are currently ranked 1 and 2 in the MCLA polls and are both currently enjoying undefeated seasons.

By adding four new official members and one honorary member in its sixth year, the CSULAA Hall of Fame now stands at 21 honorees.
