News Release – Coast Guard Academy Lacrosse Bids Farewell to Head Coach Brian Krautler

New London, Conn – Emblazoned on the foyer deck of Chase Hall (the cadet barracks) are the words of RADM Stephen H. Evans, Superintendent of the Academy (1960-1962): “Who lives here reveres honor, honors duty”. The cadets of the Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse team got a life-lesson in honoring duty this week when they found out that Head Coach Brian Krautler (also an active duty Lieutenant Commander in the Coast Guard) had received unexpected and last minute orders assigning him as the new Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Cutter HICKORY, a 225-foot sea-going buoy tender out of Homer, Alaska. Coach Krautler had a year left on his tour in New London, but the needs of the Service dictated that his talents were needed elsewhere – an old military quotation says it best “that’s why they call them orders and not invitations”.

In his three years in New London, Krautler seamlessly meshed the military rigors of the Coast Guard Academy with being a lacrosse program intent on winning. His teams went 25-10 (14-3 in the PCLL) – producing 16 PCLL All-Conference players, one PCLL Offensive Player of the Year, one PCLL Rookie of the Year, one MCLA D2 All-American, two MCLA D2 All-American – Honorable Mentions, five MCLA D2 Scholar-Athletes and earning himself the 2010 PCLL D2 Coach of the Year. However, more important than any of these statistics is the number 20 – that’s how many “leaders of character” Coach Krautler impacted, graduated and sent to the fleet as Ensigns to lead young Coast Guard men and women.

The former Superintendent, Rear Admiral Burhoe, charged his faculty to “look, act and behave in a manner consistent with our mission, and in keeping with our military culture and heritage”. Coach Krautler epitomized this expectation and will be remembered for his tremendous professionalism. Much to the surprise of the entire team on the first game of his coaching career, Coach Krautler arrived wearing his Service Dress Blue uniform – what the old timers called “dress canvas” – a navy blue single-breasted coat with notched lapels, ribbons, a name tag, rank stripes on the sleeves, a light blue dress shirt, a tie and an officer’s combination cover. He made it a regular practice and never attended a game not wearing his uniform – it was reminiscent of the black and white photos of Otto Graham stalking the Coast Guard sidelines in the 1960s. Not only did this intimidate opposing teams, it showed the members of the team and all the cadets in attendance the importance of distinguishing yourself as an officer. Coach Krautler embodied the fact that being a Coast Guard Officer is not just a job; but a profession and a calling. He lived that out in the way he led his career and the way he coached the team.

The Coast Guard’s Core Values are Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty – Coach Krautler lived them, he instilled them in his players and he made them the foundation of the Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse program. Core values were so important that cadets see them each time they dress on gameday because they are concealed in the waistline of their game shorts.

HONOR – Coach Krautler ensured the team honored the past…Lieutenant John Senyard, Class of ’83, the founder of Coast Guard Academy Lacrosse, was killed in a plane crash in Africa in 1989. His initials and class crest adorn the right sleeve of our uniforms. In 2010, Coach Krautler helped find and reunite with members of the Senyard Family – his Mom and sister attended our game against Navy and they continue to engage with the team. Captain Tom Nelson, Class of ’88 and a lacrosse player, was killed in the 6505 mishap in Hawaii – an MH-65C helicopter and the number 6505 adorn our game shorts to honor the crew and their sacrifice. Coach Krautler helped start the annual goal flag ceremony tradition with one flag honoring Lieutenant Senyard and one flag honoring our lost teammate Captain Nelson and others on the Wall of Remembrance.

RESPECT – Coach Krautler ensured the team embraced Diversity…Coach Krautler helped engage 17 inner-city lacrosse programs through the U.S. Lacrosse BRIDGE program…Building Relationships to Initiate Diversity, Growth and Enrichment and made in-roads with the Baltimore, Fort Lauderdale, Trenton and Denver affiliates. Coach Krautler used the sport of lacrosse to build Coast Guard relationships with two Historically Black Colleges and Universities – Hampton University and Morgan State University. He ensured the team understood the significance of the Morgan State University Lacrosse teams of the early 1970s and brought the team to Baltimore to participate in the annual Bears Lacrosse Showcase and Diversity Open House.

DEVOTION TO DUTY – Coach Krautler ensured the team embraced the Coast Guardsmen’s ethos…three lacrosse players earned Coast Guard Achievement Medals for coming to the aid of a female college student that sustained a severe back injury in a diving accident on Spring Break in Jamaica. These cadets stabilized her injuries, found her ground transportation and gave her roommates money to get them to the airport…”I will protect them. I will defend them. I will save them. I am their shield”.

What does all this have to do with lacrosse? At the Coast Guard Academy, quite a lot.

One of Coach Krautler’s many guest speakers, evangelist and author Joe Ehrmann, spoke to the lacrosse team about his definition of what it means to be a man – that definition is based on only two things: relationships and having a cause beyond yourself. Coach Krautler has exemplified this system of beliefs. He is a dedicated husband, father, teacher, coach and officer – he values his personal relationships and he exhibits selflessness in action, but most importantly he instilled selflessness in his players. The Coast Guard Academy’s loss is the Cutter HICKORY’s gain. Fair winds and following seas to Coach Brian Krautler.

NO. 20 Coast Guard Academy Opens Playoffs with 20-4 Victory over Central Connecticut

New London, Conn – Coast Guard Academy men’s lacrosse junior Steven Danseglio (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) finished with six points on six goals while senior goalie Cory Pray (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) finished with 12 saves as the 20th-ranked Bears (10-4, 3-1) posted a 20-4 first-round PCLL playoff victory over Central Connecticut State University (3-7, 2-2) Wednesday at Cadet Memorial Stadium.

As a result, the Coast Guard Academy earned a semifinal match against Stonehill College this Saturday, May 5th on Parsons Field (Northeastern University) at noon.

The Bears came out in a final exam week induced funk and quickly found themselves trailing early as the Blue Devils managed back-to-back goals to take a 2-0 first quarter lead. However, Danseglio, who scored 5 goals against Maine last week, got the Coast Guard offense revved up with a nice dodge and shoot down the right alley. Freshman Patrick Dreiss (Wantagh, N.Y./Holy Trinity) was not fazed by the early deficit and took charge scoring back-to-back goals to retake the lead at 3-2. Dreiss struck again minutes later with a great assist to junior James Lord (Simsbury, Conn./Westminster) for a 4-2 lead. With the clock ticking towards zero, the Bears fell asleep at the wheel and gave up a soft goal with seven seconds remaining in the quarter.

Central came out firing in the second quarter and knotted things up at four just two minutes in. However, senior Dan Symansky (Vienna, Va./Madison) won the subsequent draw and took it to the goal with a nice solo effort to regain the lead at 5-4. Senior Nick Zablotny (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) then came through with the first of his four goals and followed it up with a nice “helper” to Danseglio for a “man-up missile” (the team photographer’s description) that made it 8-4 at halftime.

Coast Guard came out for the second half… and offense couldn’t be stopped and the defense was nearly impenetrable. The Bears went on a scoring rampage, netting the next 12 goals on a run that stretched through two quarters. Zablotny got the second half scoring going off a nice assist from junior Austin English (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) who had six “helpers” on the night. Junior Joseph Kidwell (Crofton, Md./Arundel) got into the scoring column next with back-to-back goals to bring the lead to 11-4. Danseglio closed out the quarter with back-to-back goals of his own including a beautiful behind-the-back goal off a feed from English.

The Bears fed off this momentum and continued to dominate for the remainder of the game as senior Mark Ryan (Phoenix, AZ/Bernards), junior Stu Carley (Houston, Texas/James E. Taylor) and freshman Steve Reynolds (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) all tallied their first goals in the quarter.

The Bears shared the ball as eleven different players registered at least one point in the contest and 12 of the 20 goals were assisted. Senior Andrew Breen (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and junior Tim Wyderko (West Bloomfield, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary’s) led the team with six and five ground balls respectively.

New London, Conn – The United States Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2012 season. The schedule includes eight regular season games and a spring break trip to Florida to face several out of conference teams including Elon, Emory, Palm Beach Atlantic and Grand Valley State – all perennial fixtures at the top of their conferences and in the MCLA D-II Top 25.

The Bears will open up the 2012 season on Saturday, February 25th down the road against the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in a 1:00 PM game. Next they travel to Southeast Florida for the Sailfish Shootout hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University. The Sailfish have invited a number of Top 25 programs to participate in their annual event. The Bears weekend will begin on Friday, March 2nd at 7:00 PM vs. the host Sailfish.

In addition to the games on tap, Saturday, March 3rd will begin with a Diversity Open House that will include a clinic for the West Palm Beach U.S. Lacrosse BRIDGE (Building Relationships to Initiate Diversity Growth and Enrichment) affiliate, a Coast Guard recruiting and information booth and, weather permitting, a fly-in and static display by a Coast Guard helicopter and other Coast Guard assets. This will be followed by a contest between Coast Guard and Elon University at 4:00pm. March 4th matches Emory University with the Coast Guard Academy at 1:00pm. On Tuesday (Monday is a rest day), March 6th, Coast Guard will face-off against Grand Valley State at 4:00pm.

Nine days later – on March 16th, the Bears return to New England and the friendly confines of Cadet Memorial Field for their home opener against Bridgewater State at 7:00 PM. Pre-game activities will also include the traditional goal-flag ceremony commemorating Coast Guard Academy graduates and lacrosse players lost on operational missions. Two tribute flags will be attached to the goals and displayed at every home game throughout the season.

Next up for the Bears is a two-game road stretch against the preseason PCLL favorite Bulldogs of Briarcliffe College and the University of New Haven Chargers on March 22 and 28 respectively. Briarcliffe finished ranked No. 7 in the MCLA D-II national standings after winning the conference last season and making a good showing at the National Tournament in Denver.

From there, the Bears will enjoy a short home stand beginning March 30 at 7:00 PM with a rare mid-season out of conference matchup against the Carnegie Mellon Tartans of the CCLA D-II East. One week later on April 5th, the Bears will host the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut State University in a 7:00 PM contest under the lights. On April 15th, the Bears will travel to Easton, MA to face the Stonehill College Skyhawks in a game has become a heated PCLL rivalry. In 2009, Stonehill handed the Bears a tough 12-11 loss in a four-overtime thriller at Cadet Memorial Field. In 2010, the Bears avenged that loss – coming behind from four goals down for their own 12-11 victory.

In their final two regular season conference games, the Bears will face off against the Engineers of Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Cadet Memorial Field on the 20th of April at 7:00 PM before hosting the University of Maine – Orono Black Bears in the season finale at 7:00 PM on April 27th.

It will be an intense year for the Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse program and one in which the team will be tested physically, mentally and emotionally. A key determinant of the Bear’s success will be the ability to develop team chemistry while continuing to push each other to improve.

With the season finally underway, you can guarantee more and more MCLA content on everything from gear photos and team highlights to press releases on who will be leading each team to their 2012 goals. Here is a little sampler to keep you going through the week. Some videos, some light reading, we are always thinking of you.

Let’s start off with a little Auburn (SELC D1) news IN the Auburn News.

Things are looking good down in Auburn for the Tigers as they will face off against Tennessee on February 4th in their first MCLA match-up. Speaking of the Volunteers, check out this preview video posted the other day.

Out west, BYU is preparing to try and top what they accomplished last year – no easy task by any means. Check out the full preview at BYULacrosse.com. Here is a little sneak peek for you.

“We are excited about our schedule this season,” said Head Coach Matt Schneck. “The majority of our games are going to be played on the road, but we are ready for the challenges and opportunities we will face. We are going to work hard to defend the national title.”

The BYU Men’s Lacrosse team, currently ranked No. 1 in preseason polls, won the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association National Championship in May 2011 in Denver and will face a season full of nationally ranked teams.

The Cougars begin their season at home on Feb. 9, where they will host the UNLV Rebels. The next day they hit the road to play two games in Boise, Idaho – Boise State on Feb. 10 and No. 18 Simon Fraser of British Columbia on Feb. 11. Both away games will be played in the afternoon and on the famous Smurf Turf of Bronco Stadium.

Always love to see what the Cougars are up to, a top notch program, run by a top notch Head Coach in Matt Schneck.

“Andrew, Nick and Tim are great leaders – on and off the field,” said Head Coach Brian Krautler. “They embody what it means to be Coast Guard Academy cadets and I’m more than confident in their ability to lead this year’s team. 2012 is a big year for us, we sent a great deal of talent from the Class of 2011 out to the fleet, but we have a talented and experienced group of 1/c cadets that are hungry to compete and win a championship. We also have a number of younger players who will have to fill holes and play prominent roles for us in 2012,” Krautler noted. “The leadership our three captains provide will be essential to the growth and success of our team this year and our staff could not be more pleased with the selection of these young men as our team captains. These cadets know being a captain is an important responsibility and this group is looking forward to leading this year’s team and representing our program, the Coast Guard Academy and the Coast Guard.”

“One of the most unique aspects of the Coast Guard Academy, and the reason I love coaching at such a place, is that the school develops leaders of character. All seven of our seniors are a product of this leadership training, and indeed, are all outstanding leaders. Clearly, our team not only looks to our captains for guidance, but looks to the entire senior class for guidance. It makes for a team atmosphere that I am honored to be a part of.”

Cadet 1/c Andrew Breen has been an integral part of the Bears’ defense for the last three years roaming the pitch as a long stick midfielder (LSM). His defensive prowess last year earned him 2011 PCLL 2nd Team All-Conference LSM. He spent his summer training period aboard USCGC STINGRAY, an 87-foot Coastal Patrol Boat out of Mobile, AL before reporting to Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM to finish out his training. Aboard STINGRAY, he worked on Damage Control and Officer of the Deck qualifications. While underway, he participated in law enforcement boardings and search and rescue cases in the Gulf of Mexico. At Sandia, Breen worked in the Robotics Laboratory and got great hands-on experience in engineering design. A leader on and off the field, Breen organized a team fundraising effort in 2011 that raised more than $1,100 for the LT John M. Senyard Endowment. A Mechanical Engineering major, Breen has also excelled in the classroom where he was named a 2011 MCLA Scholar-Athlete. He continued that success this past fall, registering a 3.88 GPA and a ranking in the top 4 percent of his class. He is currently serving as the Regimental Morale Department Head. Breen became the 3rd member of the Mike Fredie “Hard Hat” Union with 10 ground balls vs. Stonehill College on April 09, 2011.

Cadet 1/c Andrew Breen

Cadet 1/c Nicholas Zablotny, a proud member of the “Old Bay Crew” (the sobriquet for our Maryland player contingent), has been a mainstay of the Bears offense the last two years. The midfielder notched a career-high 16 points last season, as well as scooping 22 ground balls. Zablotny spent a portion of his summer as an intern at the National Security Agency (NSA) before reporting aboard USCGC SYCAMORE, a 225-foot Seagoing Buoy Tender out of Cordova, AK to finish out his training program. Like Breen, Zablotny has also found success off the field and achieved a 3.88 GPA for the fall semester. An Electrical Engineering major, he is ranked in the top 7 percent of his class in overall order of merit which factors in both academics and military performance. He is currently serving on the Bravo Company staff. Interestingly, Zablotny’s Electrical Engineering Senior Design Project involves designing and building a dynamic positioning system – a platform that will maintain its position in the water, mimicking the systems on certain vessels and oil drilling platforms.

Cadet 1/c Nicholas Zablotny

Cadet 2/c Tim Wyderko is the anchor of the Bears defense and earned the rare honor of selection as a team captain as a junior. “Tim is an excellent one on one defender with great intuition,” said Coach Krautler. In 2011, Wyderko’s on-field exploits netted him PCLL 2nd Team All-Conference Defensemen honors. He started his summer with the Cadet Aviation Training Program and was exposed to Coast Guard aircraft and missions at the Aviation Training Center in Mobile, AL. He also had the opportunity to sail around New England with classmates and Head Lacrosse Coach, LCDR Brian Krautler, as part of the Coastal Sail Training Program. He finished up his summer training period serving as Cadre and running the newly arrived Class of 2015 through “Swab Summer” – the initial boot-camp style indoctrination period. He is a Government major and served as the Information Systems Officer last semester. Wyderko became the 2nd member of the Mike Fredie “Hard Hat” Union with 10 ground balls vs. University of New Haven on March 27, 2011.

Cadet 2/c Tim Wyderko

The Bear’s pre-season preparations got underway upon returning from Holiday Break in early January. The team’s first contest of 2012 will take place on Saturday, February 25th at 1:00 PM versus Southern Connecticut State University at Veteran’s Memorial Park in West Haven, CT. Next up, the Bears will travel to Palm Beach, FL from 2-6 March, where they will host a Diversity Open House for the local BRIDGE (Building Relationships to Initiate Diversity, Growth and Enrichment) affiliate and face Palm Beach Atlantic, Grand Valley State, Elon and Emory, in the 2012 Sailfish Shootout.

TLN has been pumping out new videos left and right, solid work from down south.

Florida State will be sporting gold Pro-7′s with the traditional FSU spear on the side of it. Looking sharp. Florida State opens their season February 1st with a game against Tampa (NCAA D2).

A lot of tradition going on right there.

While some teams were able to have games this weekend, others are still taking the opportunity to lax it up as much as they can. Portland State opens the season February 3rd with a game against Willamette. Check out a video of their shoot around below.

I’m really hoping for a lot of helmet cam fun this year.

Richmond University (SELC D1) received their gear for the 2012 season this past week, they will be sporting the STX Assault line of gear. Check out their gloves and arm protection below.

Richmond's STX Assault Gloves

If you missed it, Colorado Buffs are making a charge at 412′s #1 spot for next year’s Fashion Week with their all black K18′s. So fresh and so clean clean.

And Alabama crashed the party this weekend by getting us all excited over some Nike gloves from 2011. We act like we’re mad, but we aren’t. Hopefully they’ll send over their 2012 Brine King III’s soon so we can show them off as well (hint hint).

Down south in the LSA, Texas State will be sporting the new STX Cell II’s in white, gold, and maroon.

Shout out to Mikey for dropping these in the LAS Tipline!

At the D2 ranks, Davenport is preseason #1, rightfully so and the Coast Guard Academy announced their Team Captains for the 2012 season.

While Marshall isn’t an MCLA team, the NCLL is pretty close and they play Miami (OH) out of the GRLC D1. Anyhow, they sent us over some pictures of their 2012 game uniforms. The Team President, Calvin Britton designed these and sent them over, nicely done, sir.
