SELC Lacrosse D1 Power Rankings:
So after I finished writing last week’s SELC D1 Power Rankings, I took one last look on twitter before going to bed. And BOOM, there it was on Twitter!
While I wasn’t totally surprised with Georgia’s victory, and it is a great road win for the Dawgs, the score took me by surprise. I had just seen Clemson play South Carolina the previous Friday night, and win another close game with the Gamecocks. The Tigers almost let it slip away as the Gamecocks erased a 6 goal deficit in the 4th quarter. But the Tigers finished like a championship caliber team with the game winner with 15 seconds remaining.
The Tigers got the goal they needed to get out of Columbia SC with a victory; that’s what good teams do, and they did it. Yes, the Clemson Tigers are a Championship caliber team.
So how do how does a loss like that happen? I thought Clemson was really on their way? It’s those University of South Carolina Gamecocks. The Gamecocks have had some hard luck this year as they lost to Georgia by 2, lost to FSU by 1, lost to Virginia Tech by 1 and lost to Clemson by 1. I just needed to follow the Gamecocks scores….
GEORGIA 9 SOUTH CAROLINA 7 – NEXT GAME -> GEORGIA 7 FSU 13
FSU 12 SOUTH CAROLINA 11 – NEXT GAME -> FSU 3 CLEMSON 10–> FSU 7 GEORGIA TECH 10
CLEMSON 9 SOUTH CAROLINA 8 – NEXT GAME -> GEORGIA 14 CLEMSON 6 –> VT 11 CLEMSON 10
RICHMOND 11 SOUTH CAROLINA 5 – NEXT GAME -> RICHMOND 6 VIRGINIA TECH 15 -> RICHMOND 8 KENTUCKY 9
So there you have it, The hard luck SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS just seem to drain the life out of teams. It’s got to be some kind of MYSTERIOUS FORCE! Play the Gamecocks and they seem to have a lasting effect that includes 1, and in most cases 2, losses!Oh… almost forgot, those MYSTERIOUS FORCES have no effect on Virginia Tech Hokies!
SOUTH CAROLINA 10 VIRGINIA TECH 11 – NEXT GAME-> RICHMOND 6 VIRGINIA TECH 15
So VTech is the new #1 in this weeks SELC Power Rankings. The Hokies got to where they are by playing the best and beating the best. No Mysterious Forces involved!
So Never Mind!
SELC Lacrosse D2 Power Rankings:
Most teams were off for the Easter Holiday, but there were two significant moves in the Power Rankings.
SCAD defeated #4, and defending MCLA Champion, Davenport 7-5. This was a significant victory for the BEE’s, and they move up a spot to #3, and the SELC. For the BEE’s, it is quite clear that they have rebounded from that home loss to Palm Beach Atlantic. For the SELC it confirms to me, that the top SELC D2 teams, maybe as far down to #10, Charleston, are just as competitive with any conference in the MCLA.
We had a lively Twitter discussion regarding the SELC and the NIKE/IL COACHES POLL. I don’t have any information on how coaches do their “Due Diligence” in regards to voting. However, I do believe that coaches should be fixated on their team and their team’s next opponent. Focusing on all 117 MCLA D2 teams is not what they do, at least that is what I am thinking.
You can just look at the results of this weeks NIKE/IL COACHES POLL for proof, as Davenport is still ranked ahead of SCAD. There are a number of “Head-to-Head” match-ups that have had no impact on the national rankings (Coastal/Elon comes to mind). And it makes no sense! I personally don’t like a poll that does not explain its movements and does not publish its voters’ rankings. What I try to do in the SELC D2 POWER RANKINGS is to explain my rationale for movements within the rankings.
I would do the same if I was a voting member of a national poll, and I would publish my vote and the rationale. That doesn’t happen in the NIKE/IL COACHES POLL, hence, I haven’t really looked at the national polls this year. Maybe I should do a MCLA D1 and D2 POWER RANKING in 2013! Hmm… Now that’s an idea!
I need more information on the North Florida situation. Looks like North Florida haas packed it in for the season. It’s bad form and I dropped them to the bottom of the Power Rankings because of it. I am hoping that it is not a serious situation and that the North Florida program is not in jeopardy.
