CARNESVILLE, Ga. –– Junior attackman Dominic Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) scored sixteen points in a 24-16 victory over Emmanuel College (0-2). Scalzo’s eleven goals tied a PBA single-game record (Trey Darby, 2010), while his sixteen points are good for second all-time.
Early on, Emmanuel seized momentum raced off to a 3-0 lead, energized by the home crowd. Two Scalzo goals stemmed the tide before Dennis Koleda (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields) found LSM Tranard Cannon (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Jupiter Christian), who buried a high-to-high shot tying the game at three. Another Scalzo goal gave PBA its’ first lead of the game, 4-3, but it was short-lived; the Sailfish and Lions ended the first quarter tied at four.
Emmanuel continued to take advantage of sloppy play early by Palm Beach Atlantic, outscoring the ‘Fish 4-1 before Bobby Hantske (Annapolis, Md./Southern) notched his first goal of the game. As it happened frequently, Scalzo continued to answer: the former UMBC attackman and America East All-Freshman selection scored at 6:03 of the second quarter to cut Emmanuel’s lead to 9-7.
After the Lions added another goal, PBA went on a run to end the half, with goals coming from Joe Ciringione (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun), Abel Cartwright (Stuart, Fla./Jupiter Christian), Hantske, Colin Price (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock), and Scalzo. The final three goals came in the span of 0:18, giving PBA a 12-10 lead and momentum going into halftime.
Moving on to the third, PBA continued what was a twelve goal run, scoring seven times in just over nine minutes and taking a 19-10 lead. Two of those goals came from senior Ryan Talks (Palm Beach, Fla./St. Andrew’s), the second of which was assisted by Scalzo. It was the first of an eight goal stretch in which he had a goal or assist. Emmanuel engaged in a four goal run before Joe Ciringione scored the day’s final goal, contributing to the final 24-16 count.
In total, 19 of 24 PBA goals were assisted, thanks to exceptional ball movement and a high shooting percentage (37.5%, 24-for-68).
