Griffins Welcome No. 4 Concordia to Dumke Field on Saturday
SALT LAKE CITY – The second-ranked Westminster College men’s lacrosse team welcomes No. 4 Concordia (Calif.) to Dumke Field on Saturday. The action will begin at 1 p.m. between the two ranked teams and it marks the fourth time this season that Westminster has played a ranked opponent this season.
The Griffins head into Saturday’s game at 10-4 overall this season and riding a four-game winning streak. They have outscored the opposition 86-12 during the winning streak and have scored at least 20 goals in three of those contests. Westminster is 4-1 at home this year and they are 7-12 against MCLA Division 2 teams this season.
Collin Madsen leads the Griffins with 51 points on the year behind 35 goals and 16 assists. Jake Arthur leads the team with 36 goals scored while Kyle Postler has recorded a team-best 30 assists. Westminster also has Adam Marfice, Elias Fairman, Cole Christensen and Postler that have topped the 20-goal plateau.
The 36 goals scored by Arthur this season move his career total to 146 which move him to first all-time in school history. Arthur has averaged 1.18 goals per game during his career and sits at 2.58 per game this season. The senior has also recorded 173 points in his career which ranks third in team history. He sits just 17 points away from tying the record held by Gian Sexsmith and is averaging 3.21 points per game this season.
Erik Gronseth has been solid in cage for the Griffins all season. The freshman is allowing 5.66 goals per game with a .639 save percentage. He is 7-1 on the year and has played in 12 games. Chris Burckle has played in nine games with a .530 save percentage while allowing 9.28 goals per game. Ben Tourek has recorded a .750 save percentage while allowing 2.41 goals per outing.
Concordia comes to SLC with an 8-1 record and winner of seven consecutive games. The Eagles have scored at least 23 goals in each of the past three contests and they have reach 2-0 goals in five games this year. Dustin Seguin leads the team with 59 points behind 33 goals and 26 assists. Josh Fagan and Marcus Turner have added 28 and 25 goals respectively for the Eagles.
Cody Cook and Kelly McMinn have split time on cage for the Eagles this season. Cook is averaging 5.67 saves per game with a .699 save percentage. McMinn is posting 4.11 saves per contest and has a .638 save percentage.
Westminster holds a 2-0 edge in the all-time series against Concordia. The teams have met in each of the past two seasons with the Griffins winning 17-12 last season and 16-11 in 2011.
