FGCU Notches Another Win, Beats Miami
Ft. Myers, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Men’s Lacrosse team posted their eighth consecutive win this season by beating the University of Miami, an MCLA division I program, on Saturday, March 30th by a score of 16 – 4. Danny Meyer (Sophomore/Jupiter, FL) was the first to strike for FGCU two minutes into the first period. It would be the first of three goals the Eagles midfielder would score in the game.
FGCU goalie Tyler Morrone (Sophomore/Ft. Myers, FL) made two outstanding saves very early in the first period of play setting a strong defensive tone that would last throughout the game. Attackman Vinny Valentine (Junior/Buffalo, NY) notched the Eagles second goal. Miami found themselves man-down about five minutes into the first period opening the door for Shane Noble (Freshman/Flagler Beach, FL) to bury the ball into the net scoring FGCU’s third goal. Like Danny Meyer, Noble tallied three goals in the contest.
Miami answered on the next possession with their only goal of the half. The Eagles then went on a relentless seven goal scoring run dominating time of possession throughout the remainder of the half and clearly frustrating their opponent. The halftime score was 10-1 in FGCU’s favor. FGCU began the third period of play right where they left off before the half scoring three more unanswered goals on Miami. One of which was a bullet by Eagles midfielder Corey Eaton (Freshman/Coral Springs, FL). Another was the result of a well-timed fast break feed from Eagles face-off specialist Tommy Twyford (Junior/North Palm Beach, FL) to Shane Noble on the crease. The Hurricanes found the back of the net on the following possession for their second score of the game, one of the few highlights for a Miami squad that found themselves stymied by the strong Eagles defense.
At the end of the third quarter the score was FGCU 14 – Miami 2. Goalie Sean Blatcher (Sophomore/Winslow, NJ) stepped into the net for FGCU during the final period, which was dominated mostly by defensive play by both squads. Each team posted two more scores during the fourth quarter resulting in a final score of FGCU 16 – Miami 4. The Eagles offensive power and depth of talent shined during the Miami matchup with a total of nine different players scoring goals.
What’s even more impressive is that twenty-five different FGCU players have scored goals thus far this season. Florida Gulf Coast faces SELC powerhouse SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) Saturday, April 13th, and then finishes their regular season of play against divisional rival Palm Beach Atlantic University on Thursday, April 18th. Both matches are evening games that will be held in the FGCU soccer stadium.
