FGCU Bests Georgia Southern
Ft. Myers, FL – The Florida Gulf Coast University Men’s Lacrosse Club beat SELC division rival Georgia Southern on St. Patrick’s Day by a score of 17 to 4. A festive atmosphere, fueled by the entertaining performance of the FGCU Dance Team and nearly 200 spectators, many clad in Gulf Coast green, energized the hometown Eagles to the commanding win. FGCU posted nine unanswered goals during the first two periods of play which included a hat trick by attackman Shane Noble (Freshman/Flagler Beach, FL).
A notable first half highlight was also provided by defenseman Curtis Mere (Freshman/Fort Myers, FL) who ripped a shot from just above the box into the back of the net. Eagles goalie Tyler Marrone (Sophomore/Ft. Myers, FL) made several outstanding saves during the first half to keep Georgia Southern scoreless. Mark Bell (Junior/Columbus, NJ) stepped into the net for FGCU during the second half. Five minutes into the third period of play the Eagles went man down and allowed Georgia to score their first goal. That score was quickly answered by D-pole Matt VanKeuren (Junior/Tequesta,FL) who rolled down the field after snagging a ground ball and blasted a shot into the net.
Georgia Southern went man-down with eight minutes remaining in the third period. That opened the door for middie Danny Meyer (Sophomore/Jupiter, FL) to blister an underhanded shot into the net. It was one of two goals Meyer had in the game. After scoring one other goal, Georgia was unable to capitalize on a man-up situation late in the third quarter and the period ended with the score 11 to 2. Excellent defensive play by FGCU at the beginning of the final period resulted in a turnover and gave attackman Eric Anderson (Junior/Sanibel, FL) the momentum to notch his second goal of the game. The Eagles went man down two minutes into the fourth quarter giving Georgia several good looks at the net but none found their mark.
Back at full strength, FGCU attackman Charles Porter (Sophomore/Islamorada, FL) sent a rocket into the net after a perfect feed on the crease from teammate Danny Meyer. After another man-down stop thanks to a great save by Eagles goalie Mark Bell, Charles Porter buried another goal increasing FGCU’s lead by 11. Additional fourth quarter highlights included goals by Drew Lawler (Sophomore/Wesley Chapel, FL), Alec Christy (Junior/Winter Park, FL) and Tyler Lombardo (Freshman/Jupiter, FL). With two minutes left to play Georgia scored their fourth goal of the game bringing the final score to 17 to 4.
The depth of FGCU’s offensive play shined throughout the game. Adding to the game’s highlight reel was Tommy Twyford (Junior/North Palm Beach, FL) who won 17 of 19 face offs and had eight ground balls. The FGCU victory was celebrated with a family BBQ following the game. This coming weekend the FGCU Eagles head north to Georgia to square off against SELC conference opponents Kennesaw State University and Reinhardt University.
