BYU Set to Begin Season against Boise State

PROVO, Utah — The No. 3 BYU Cougars are set to play the Boise State Broncos in their season opener.  The teams will face-off at North University Lacrosse Field on Friday, February 8th at 7:00 p.m. MST in Provo.

This will be the third meeting between the two teams with BYU leading the series 2-0. Last season, the BYU beat Boise State 15-3.

Head Coach Matt Schneck feels his team is ready for their first game.

“We are excited for our season opener against Boise State,” Schneck said. “The team and the coaches have been working hard during the pre-season and everyone is ready to get the season started.  Boise State is a great team with a great coach and we are happy to continue this early season tradition that has been established with the Broncos.”

Goalie and Captain Robert Ostler is anxious to play against Boise State and to see how BYU will perform this season.

“Boise State gets better and better every year,” Ostler said.  “They’ll come down fired up and looking for a win, but so are we.  We’ve been working arduously every morning for the past month and I’m proud of my team. It’s time to see what we’ve really learned and that can only come in games.”

Last year Boise State finished the season 4-6 and third in the PNCLL. The team will be led by three seniors, including attacker Gunnar Guth.  Guth was named to the 2nd PNCLL All-Conference team last season and averaged 3.9 points per game.

Boise State head coach Paul Rocchio is grateful for the opportunity to play against BYU and expects the game to be a tough battle.

“We want to thank Coach Schneck for scheduling us a third year in a row,” Rocchio said.  “We get a great deal out of this game each year because playing a team at BYU’s level speeds us up and makes us better. BYU is in the top 5 every year because they are extremely well coached and they have a great deal of talent. I expect them to come out and play the game at a different speed than us because that is who they are.”

Tickets for the game can be purchased at the gate.  All home games are played at North University Lacrosse Field located at 2300 North Canyon Road in Provo.

The Brigham Young University Men’s Lacrosse Team is a proud member of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA). The Cougars have won four MCLA National Championship Titles – 1997, 2000, 2007 and 2011, and have been honored with more than 100 All-Americans who have proudly worn the Y.
