BYU Lacrosse Announces 2013 Recruiting Class

PROVO, Utah—The BYU men’s lacrosse has announced its 2013 recruiting class.  Thirteen lacrosse players will be joining the team.

Head Coach Matt Schneck is excited about this year’s recruiting class and says that it is one of the most talented and diverse recruiting classes in recent years.

“The 2013 recruiting class in one of the more diverse recruiting classes that we have had in recent years,” said Schneck.  “We have been working with some of our recruits for several years and have seen them play at our camps, on film and even at our recruiting events.  We started with over 70 potential recruits and narrowed that down to a list of elite lacrosse players that have each been chosen for a specific reason.  We are confident that these elite student athletes are going to be a strong addition to our program”.

Sam Ash is a 6’2”, 215 lb. midfielder from Olathe, Kansas.  Ash plays for Olathe Northwest High School under head coach Sam Spallitta.  He has earned the honor of being Varsity Team Captain during both the 2012 and 2013 season.  Ash plans on studying international business at BYU.  His brother Max Ash played lacrosse for BYU in 2012 and is currently serving a mission.

Cole Bryan is a 5’10”, 165 lb. midfielder from Las Vegas, Nevada.  Bryan plays for Palo Verde High School under coach Gary Campo.  Bryan has been on the Varsity Team since 2010 and was team captain during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.  His team was SNLA State Champions in 2012 and 2011.  He has also played on the Elite Vegas Starz, West Coast Starz and High Rollers.  In 2012, Bryan was named the All Star Midfield.  He was also named All State Faceoff/Midfield in 2011.  Bryan also played football at Palo Verde and was named Defensive MVP.  He is planning on studying business while at BYU.

Kevin Colton is a 6’0”, 190 lb. player from Johns Creek, Georgia who plays attack.  Colton plays for Northview High School for head coach Mike Ryan.  Colton has been named a team captain for the 2013 season.  During 2012, he was an All-American, Team MVP, team captain and made the All-State 1st Team.  He has led the varsity team in goals and assists during his three years of high school.

Winston Farley is a 5’7”, 143 lb. attackman from Orem, Utah.  Farley plays for Timpanogos High School under head coach Bill Peperone.  He was named to the UHSLL Second Team All-Conference in 2012.

Nicholas Fazio is a 5’9”, 170 lb. face-off specialist from Geneva, New York.  Fazio plays for head coach LJ Russell at Geneva High School.  Fazio received the honor of being named to the BYU All-Star Team in 2011 during elite week.  He also plays soccer and was a New York State Scholar Athlete and named to the Finger Lakes All-Defense Team.  He plans on being a pre-med student at BYU.

Aaron Fjeldsted is a 5’10”, 160 lb. attackman from Utah.  Fledsted plays for Lone Peak High School under head coach Marlin Coe.  He was ranked as the 18th recruit for the 2013 class by West Side Lacrosse.  He was also named a Brine National All-American All-Star and was a member of the West Coast Stars team.  Fjeldsted plans on studying civil engineering at BYU.  His brother Erik plays lacrosse at Utah State.

Alec Grant  is a 6’0”, 160 lb. midfielder from Las Vegas, Nevada.  Grant plays for coach Gary Campo at Palo Verde High School.  Grant was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player in 2012 and has won two state championships with his team (2011 & 2012).  He plans on being a pre-med student at BYU.  His brother Jordan plays lacrosse at UNLV.

James Kunzler is a 6’2”, 164 lb. attackman from Salem, Oregon.  Kunzler plays for South Salem High School under head coach Kyle Scott.  He was named team captain for the 2013 season.  In 2012 he was named to 1st Team All-District and his team was district champions.  So far, Kunzler has earned two varsity letters.  He plans on majoring in electrical engineering at BYU.

Michael Perry is a 5’7”, 145 lb. attackman from Pleasant Grove, Utah.  Perry plays for head coach Brae Burbidge at Pleasant Grove High School.  He was named to the All-Conference teams during the 2012 and 2011 seasons.  He plans on being a pre-med student at BYU.  His brother Kooper Barton played lacrosse at UVSC.

CJ Raia is a 6’1”, 190 lb. midfielder from Darien, Connecticut.  Raia plays lacrosse for the nationally ranked Darien High School Blue Wave under head coach Jeff Brameier.  He received All-FCIAC Honors in 2012 and was a Connecticut Super Junior.  Raia will serve as a team captain for the 2013 season.  He also played football in high school and ran track.  He was named to the All-State 4×200 and All-State SMR Indoor Track Teams.  He plans on majoring in economics or business.

Jarrin Wallace is a 5’9”, 145 lb. goalie from Boise, Idaho.  Wallace plays for Centennial High School under head coach Britt Cornaby.  In 2012 he was named an Idaho All-Star and was on the All-State First Team.  In 2010, he was an All-State Honorable Mention.  He plans on studying molecular biology at BYU.  His brothers Kevin and Neil have both played lacrosse at BYU.

Arty Walter is a 5’10”, 180 lb. defensive player from Sandy, Utah.  Walter plays for Alta High School under head coach Mark Davis.  Walter played lacrosse in Seattle before moving to Utah and won a state championship and was a Varsity Team Captain.  Walter also plays football and basketball.  He plans on studying physics while at BYU.

Brad Mason is a 5’11”, 175 lb attackman from McLean, Virginia.  Mason is transferring from Utah State and is currently serving his mission in Chile.   While playing at McLean High School, he was the leading scorer his junior and senior year, was honored as Team Captain and earned 1st team all-district honors as well as.  He also played varsity basketball.

The Brigham Young University Men’s Lacrosse Team is a proud member of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA). The Cougars have won four MCLA National Championship Titles – 1997, 2000, 2007 and 2011, and have been honored with more than 100 All-Americans who have proudly worn the Y.
