WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ––– Palm Beach Atlantic found their offensive spark over the weekend, defeating Florida Atlantic University 19-1 and Valdosta State University 17-1.
The Sailfish (3-1) began the weekend on Friday night, traveling down to the FAU campus in Boca Raton, Florida for the first-ever meeting against their Palm Beach County rivals. PBA led the Owls 3-1 after one quarter, before expanding the lead with a six-goal second.
Palm Beach Atlantic carried a 9-1 lead into the second half, and added onto it with five goals in each quarter, finalizing the 19-1 victory. Leading the way for PBA were efforts from senior attackman Joe Ciringione (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun), who had two goals/five assists and sophomore Colin Price (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock), who had five goals/two assists. In goal, senior Cory Ender (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) had a .917 save percentage in addition to eleven saves.
On Saturday, the Sailfish returned to the friendly confines of their home field to welcome Valdosta State University. The Blazers (0-5), battled throughout, trailing 2-1 after one quarter before the onslaught ensued. Fifteen Sailfish goals over the final three quarters, including seven in the second quarter, put the game away with decisiveness.
Defensively, PBA was stout from start to finish, rising to the occasion when called upon–––including offensively. Senior defender Branden Bernstein (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) took a ball coast-to-coast for a goal, while Ender added an assist on a well-thrown pass from the midline in the fourth quarter. At attack, Ciringione finished with the same marks again, two goals and five assists, while senior Ryan Talks (Palm Beach, Fla./St. Andrew’s) had another three goal/one assist game, giving him eight points on the weekend.
Freshman Dan Barry (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) recorded hat tricks in consecutive games over the weekend, while fellow freshman Joey Mazzola (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Jupiter Christian) finished with two goals and two assists. Also of note: sophomore Jack East (Marietta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) recorded his first goal in a Sailfish uniform following his transfer from Kennesaw State University.
