Indiana Opens Season at Indy Shootout
The game is one of three taking place at the Indy Shootout held at Zionsville High School. The Hoosiers also play Toledo Sunday at 11:30 AM. Illinois State and Toledo meet Saturday afternoon at 2pm.
“This weekend marks a pivotal litmus test for us as a program. We’re anxious to see how far we’ve come season since last year,” said head coach Peter Tumbas. Last year’s Indiana team went 2-12, including a loss to Illinois State, but returns the bulk of the roster and welcomes a highly touted freshman class.
Senior Matt Anderson (Heritage Christian, IN) leads the team with 86 career goals. Anderson will partner with senior James Maher (Montclair, NJ), who has 59 career points. “Matt and James must lead the way at the start of the season until our freshmen and sophomore middies get settled in,” said Tumbas.
“We have depth at the offensive midfield where we had none last year but the top players still have to produce to free up the secondary scorers.” The coaching staff expects freshman Colin Donnelly (Cathedral, IN) to make an immediate impact.
The defensive unit returns starting goalie Peter Moore (Lake Forest, IL), an Illinois high school All American and transfer from Adrian College.
“We believe he’s the best goalie in the conference. He’ll put up better numbers with a stronger group in front of him,” said Tumbas. “Similar to the offensive side of the ball, we have more depth and talent on defense this spring. Their challenge will be, how quickly can they adjust to the speed of the college game.”
“It’s a very exciting team for Indiana University lacrosse and lacrosse in the state. We’re happy to be a part of it. We’re thankful to Zionsville for hosting this event.”
Friday marks the season opener for Illinois State as well. It is also the first Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference game for both teams.
Toledo is currently 1-1.
