Horschig Posts Four First-Half Goals in Spartan Victory
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri Baptist men’s lacrosse senior Brandon Horschig recorded four consecutive first-half goals on Thursday as the Spartans beat Northern Colorado 13-3.
Missouri Baptist put together an exciting first-half, all started by David Justvig. The senior out of Fox High School started the scoring just over one minute into the game. The goal was his 13th of the season.
Just three minutes later, the Spartans struck again when a shot by Brandon Horschig bounced behind Northern Colorado netminder Brian Dean, to give MBU a 2-0 lead. Horschig added another first quarter goal at the 7:10 mark to give his team a quick 3-0 lead.
After the first quarter, Missouri Baptist began the scoring again. Horschig nearly let five minutes go by in the period before burying his third goal of the game, a natural hat trick, to give his team a 4-1 lead.
Northern Colorado answered. At the 4:46 mark of the second period, Bears’ freshman Kail Voight cut the Spartan lead to three on a shot from about seven feet out. This was one of only a few that MBU keeper Blake Barnett let get behind him in the entire match.
With just 1:16 remaining in the half, Horschig did it again, scoring his fourth on the day to give his team a 5-1 lead heading into the half.
After the break, in only took MBU’s Brad Keel 31 seconds to find the back of the net. Keel pumped in a goal from the right side of the net, giving the Spartans a 6-1 lead. Keel notched his second of the day nearly 10 minutes later to break open a 7-1 lead.
After Keel’s second goal, the Bears seemed to find renewed life. Northern Colorado’s Connor Knobloch scored with 4:27 remaining in the third quarter to make it a 7-2 MBU advantage.
Just seconds later, the Bear’s Tyler Vogel nearly had his team’s third goal. Just one foot in front of the net, Vogel put a hard shot on, but the Spartans’ Barnett turned the shot away like a pro to preserve the 7-2 lead.
As the fourth quarter was set to begin, the rain began to settle-in over the field and lightning strikes in the area forced play to be halted by the officials. After over an hour of delays, the game was postponed until Friday at 9:45 a.m.
As play resumed on Friday, the Spartans picked-up right where they left off. David Justvig put two more into the back of the net, while Ryan Zimmer, Brett Johnson and Alex Belosi all added goals in the final 15 minutes.
Spartan goalie Barnett also added two more saves before getting pulled by coach Andy Joly to give his top keeper some rest heading into Saturday’s game. Freshman Ben Bowler played the final eight minutes and surrendered just one goal.
Missouri Baptist will attempt to continue its strong play at home on Saturday. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m. at Christian Brothers College High School.
