GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The 2012 Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) released its national polls on Tuesday and Davenport University will enter as the preseason No. 1. The Panthers captured the program’s first national championship a year ago and is followed by No. 2 St. Thomas whom they defeated in the title game.
Head Coach Bob Clarkson and his 2012 squad are gearing up for another CCLA and MCLA run and they found out this week that they are ranked No. 1 in the preseason polls released on mcla.us. The Panthers posted a 14-9 win in last year’s national championship game over St. Thomas (Minn.) to secure the program’s first ever national title.
Behind Davenport is St. Thomas and rounding out the top 5 are familiar CCLA foes University of Dayton and rival Grand Valley State as well as St. John’s (Minn.). DU will play all four of those schools throughout the 2012 campaign.
Of the top-10 programs across the country, Davenport has scheduled seven of those which also includes No. 7 Briar Cliff (N.Y.), No. 8 SCAD (Ga.) and No. 9 North Dakota State. Also in the Top-25 on the Panthers’ schedule are No. 13 Missouri Baptist, No. 19 Hope College and No. 23 Indiana Tech.
As if their D2 schedule was not tough enough already, the Panthers open their season with a February 11 battle against MCLA D1 No. 6 Michigan State. That game will be played in Pontiac and there will be live stats available on DU’s athletic website www.dupanthers.com.
“It is nice to be ranked number 1 anytime you can get it. However, at this point it is based off of last years play and everyone starts on an even slate. Defending the title always puts a bulls eye on your back. We know that we will have to play our very best to get to the championships. We look forward to a great year.”
The poll will be released every Tuesday throughout the season starting February, 21 2012.
