PR – Clemson to host Florida State in Top 15 Match-up

For Immediate Release:

Game between two Top 15 MCLA teams to be followed by NCAA DIII contest between Birminghan Southern University and Guilford College.

Greenville, SC:  The 12th ranked Clemson University men’s lacrosse team will play the #10 ranked Seminoles of Florida State University on the new turf field at the Ray and Joan Kroc Salvation Army Community Center at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 25th, 2012. Following the Tiger-Seminole game the Kroc field will host a game between Birmingham Southern and Guilford College.

Clemson and Florida State are nationally ranked rivals in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) and both have legitimate aspirations of qualifying for the field in the MCLA National Championships to be hosted by Greenville from May 14th – May 19th, 2012. Florida State defeated Clemson in the 2011 SELC (SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference) Championship Finals in Atlanta last April.

“There’s every reason to expect this game to be top tier,” said Clemson Head Coach Buff Grubb. “FSU was the only team to beat us last year when we finished 14-2 and they won the conference championship in the process. Both teams are highly ranked thus far in the 2012 season and the only MCLA losses for either of us so far has been to Boston College who is ranked #5 nationally.”

“One of the reasons we wanted to play this game in Greenville is to give the community a taste of the quality of lacrosse heading this way in May,” states Grubb. “Both of these teams are legitimate contenders to be competing in the Nationals and Saturday’s game should give Greenville a good idea of the level of play of the elite MCLA teams. Both of these teams like to play up and down, fast paced lacrosse, the kind it’s easy to get excited about and to enjoy.”

Immediately after the conclusion of the Tiger – Seminole game, Birmingham Southern University and Guilford College will take the field in a NCAA DIII contest. “The coaches at BSU and Guilford contacted us over the fall about possibly hosting their game since we are just about midway between their campuses,” said Grubb. “It worked out nicely that their date aligned with our Florida State game and we can put a second strong game on the field in front of Greenville fans.”

Hosting the games will be the Ray and Joan Kroc Salvation Army Community Center and their new state of the art turf field. Located at 424 Westfield Street in Greenville, The Kroc Center opened in the Fall of 2011 and provides a wealth of opportunity and services to the community.
