11 February 2012 – BYU Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Boise State
The BYU Men’s Lacrosse Team defeated Boise State University 15-3 at Bronco Stadium in Boise on Friday evening.
BYU (2-0) held its own throughout the first quarter, outscoring the Broncos (0-1) 6-0. Senior Ted Ferrin had a hot streak when he scored three goals in a row in just three minutes.
The second quarter showed more scoring from the BYU offense, who saw success from their starters as well as the bench. Freshmen Christian Taylor and Andrew Bertha both scored their first collegiate goals during the second quarter.
With a halftime score of 10-1, the Broncos were showing no sign of letting down when the third quarter came. Both teams’ defenses were strong, while the Broncos only allowed BYU three goals.
The Bronco offense scored two goals in a row at the onset of the fourth quarter. BYU responded with two more goals throughout the quarter, finishing the game with a solid 15-3 victory for the Cougars.
“We were very pleased with how our team came out and responded this evening,” BYU Head Coach Matt Schneck said. “We were happy that [Boise State Head] Coach Rocchio invited us to come and play this weekend. It was a unique experience for our boys to be able to play here at Bronco Stadium.”
Rocchio recognized the Boise State Lacrosse program is still relatively young compared to BYU’s almost 40-year tradition.
“We’re very young and [BYU is] very experienced,” Rocchio said. “We’re happy with the progress over the four quarters, and now we’ll focus on Sunday.” The Broncos will face Simon Fraser University on Sunday afternoon.
After the game, Coach Schneck presented the game ball to freshman attack Christian Taylor for his exceptional performance in the game.
“I ran on the field, and I don’t really even know what happened but all of a sudden the ball was in the net and I’m the one who put it there,” Taylor said. “I didn’t expect to be presented with the game ball, but it’s nice to be recognized for the little things that happen.”
The Cougars will look for their third win in three days on Saturday when they face Simon Fraser University at Bronco Stadium.
