PR – Alabama Announces 2012 Team Captains and Schedule

Tuscaloosa, Alabama – January 24, 2012 – The University of Alabama Men’s Lacrosse team aims to make its first SELC tournament as a Division 1 team this season. New faces, on the coaching staff and on the field, represent the overhaul the Tide has undergone this off-season. Alabama has elected three captains for the 2012 season: Conor Conway, Shane Ryan, and Jake Springer.Conway, a senior defenseman from Hoover, AL, was the Tide’s unquestioned leader at close defense last season. He lead the team in groundballs with 43, often guarding the opposing offense’s best attackman. Conor’s seniority and leadership by example are a key asset to the Alabama defense this year.

“It is an honor to be voted a captain by this team,” said Conway. “Myself, and the rest of the team included, are excited by the opportunity to take this program in a new direction.

Ryan, a sophomore midfielder from Baltimore, MD, is one of the hardest-working and most personable players on the team. Shane’s positivity and hustle are infectious enough that his teammates voted him a captain even as a sophomore.

“Since last April, we’ve worked tirelessly to assemble a great coaching staff and lots of younger talent,” Ryan said. “It’s going to be a great year and we are determined not to disappoint.”

Springer, a junior goalie from Baltimore, MD, returns this season after a torn ACL forced him to miss most of the 2011 season. Jake compiled a 69.2% save percentage in 5 games played last season, ranking 3rd overall in the MCLA.

“I’ve never been a captain before at any level, so it means a lot to be voted one this year by my teammates,” said Springer. “Our 2012 schedule has the toughest competition we’ve ever faced. Hopefully, the SELC gauntlet we face will be the catalyst we need to win the SELC West.”

Alabama’s season begins with a scrimmage against Division III Birmingham Southern College Saturday, Jan. 28th at 2:00 PM. The following weekend, they open up their MCLA season at home Friday, Feb. 3rd with a highly anticipated game against a familiar rival: LSU.
