MCLA D2 Bracket Breakdown – The Finals

3 - Published May 21, 2011 by in Uncategorized

And then there were two. Not much else to say. Yesterdays games were incredibly close, including a 4OT thriller, and a rematch from a regular season game.

Here’s what we said on Thursday vs what actually happened

#1 Grand Valley State vs #5 Davenport – This is the third time they’ve met this season. GVSU has won both the previous mathcups. Can they go 3-0 against the Panthers? Logic tells me yes, but I’m going to go with Davenport on this one. I’d hate losing to the same team twice in a season. Getting a third shot, I’d play my hardest. If Davenport doesn’t do that, they’re gone. I say Davenport by a close margin. Grand Valley couldn’t keep the magic going vs Davenport. The Panthers took it in the closest game of the day. 16-15 in 4 extra periods.

#2 Saint Thomas vs #6 Dayton – Dayton has a sour taste in their mouths from the last 3 times they’ve played the Tommies. Earlier this season, they dropped the game vs the reigning two-time champs  by a score of 11-13 on a neutral site. 2 years ago, they played for the title with the Tommies coming away with a 16-11 victory. Can the Flyers finally pull one out? I don’t think so. UST wins this one in another close battle. It was another close Dayton-UST game. Once again, the Tommies had the flyers number in their closest matchup yet. Final score of 12-11.

#1 Saint Thomas vs #5 Davenport – Both teams are quite familiar to meeting each other in high pressure games. They’ve met 3 times before, two of which came in the tournament semi-finals. It’s hard to stop a team on a roll, and UST is on a roll.  Davenport hasn’t ever been able to come up with a win against UST, and I don’t really see that happening today. I’m gonna say UST by 5 goals. If you want to watch the game, tune in to Fox College Sports at 5 EDT/3 MDT!

With a day full of hail, tornadoes, and rain out of the way, we look at our final four on the D2 side.  Some people took shelter in bathrooms, some people took shelter at their hotel, even more took shelter in an electrical closet during an electrical storm.  On to the games!

Yesterday, we gave you prediction of the quarters. we’ll put what we said over what actually happened.

#1 Grand Valley State vs #9 SCAD – This will just be more of the same. Grand Valley just has too much for SCAD to handle. The SELC team will bow out after the first round, like usual. It was more of the same for GVSU. 22-13 was the final.

#2 Saint Thomas vs #10 Westminster – They met earlier this season with UST winning 15-7. Westminster only has a chance if they can find a way to stop Joe Costello, who went off for 7 with an assist in their early March matchup. A lot closer than I expected. Costello went for 4 and a helper in a relatively low scoring affair. UST took the win 9-7.

#3 Saint Johns vs #6 Dayton – This game could go either way, to be honest. Both teams have been at the top of the heap for years. I think Dayton pulls it out, just based on who they play in the CCLA.  Dayton proved that the CCLA isn’t a conference to mess with as they rolled over St. Johns.

#4 Briarcliffe vs #5 Davenport – this game has all the ingredients to be the best quarterfinal game of the day. Briarcliffe still has a chip on their shoulder and Davenport has amazing scoring ability vis Shawn Beer. I really want to pick Briarcliffe, but logic says to pick Davenport. Maybe next year, Bulldogs. This was the biggest blowout of the day, surprisingly. Briarcliffe gave Davenport all the could handle, but its hard to come out of an 11-0 hole after the first quarter. Davenport pulled it off on the shoulders of Shawn Beer’s 10 points. 23-10 is the final.

And now we preview the Final Four!

Some good matchups, but only 2 conference represented. I’d say the CCLA is the best conference in the D2 land after yeszterday, wouldn’t you? You should.

Big props to my SELC boys, SCAD at making another run to the quarters! Doing us proud! Congrats to Briarcliffe on showing us to start taking the PCLL D2 serious. Hoe they can keep it up next year! Congrats to Westie for trying to make another run as the 10 seed. They fell just a bit short of equaling last years remarkable run to the Final Four! And finally, congrats to my boys at Saint Johns University in Collegeville, MN. Their season didn’t end where they wanted it to, but considering they are the closest D2 team to my home town, and I’ve actually been to their campus, gotta say I’m proud of their efforts!

Can’t wait to see next years tournament and next season’s OOC games!

The first round is complete and the quarterfinals are underway! The games, for the most part, went as planned. Only two upsets in the first round, and not even big ones, at that. Westminster ended Western Oregon‘s dreams, while SCAD finished off North Dakota State‘s surprising season. You can see our full first round prediction at the end of this post.

But first, what did we get right?

#1 Grand Valley State vs #16 Sam Houston State – While the Bearkats are a great team, their lack of good in-conference competition limits them heavily. Expect Grand Valley to have a field day next Tuesday. Grand Valley had a field day disatching the Bearkats by a score of  25-7.

#2 Saint Thomas vs #15 Cal State Fullerton – UST was one of the two MCLA tournament teams I had the pleasure of watching this season. As two-time defending champions, they’re the favorite. Fullerton got in from winning the SLC. They’ve faired well against middle of the road competition, but fell against the 2 tournament teams they faced. UST just has too much firepower at every position. 11 Tommies scored as opposed to just 3 Titans. Final was 17-3.

#3 Saint John’s vs #14 Missouri Baptist – This is the first of two rematches from the regular season. SJU took the first game by a score of 9-7. If Mo Bap is able to keep it close like that again, they might have a good shot at pulling the upset. Otherwise, I see the Johnnies coming away with the win. The Spartans weren’t able to keep it close for a second time. Johnnies 12-5.

#4 Briarcliffe vs #13 Hope – Briarcliffe came out of nowhere last year and burst on the national scene as a #14 seed, taking eventual runner-up Utah Valley to their limits. They don’t have the luxury of being under the radar this year. Their opponent, Hope College comes in undefeated outside of the CCLA. This will probably be the best game of the first session. Briarcliffe will come out on top in a thriller. A lot of scoring, including a 13 goal 3rd quarter. Briarcliffe took it 21-14

#5 Davenport vs #12 Utah Valley University – Both of these teams were runners-up in their conference tournaments. Davenports has tons of offensive firepower. Over 200 points coming from the starting Attack line looks to be too much for the Wolverines. Davenport had a seemingly even amount of scoring, aside from Shawn Beer, who dropped in 8 tallies with 4 helpers. Panthers won 23-9.

#6 Dayton vs #11 Northern Colorado – Dayton is the other tournament team I saw in person. They gave UST all they could handle for a while. Any team that can do that definitely has a good shot at winning in the first round. Dayton exploded for 7 in the third quarter to take it in an otherwise fairly even game

#7 Western Oregon vs #10 Westminster – This is the other regular season match-up.  The Wolves of Western Oregon are coming into this game with the 3rd best record in the country. (Only undefeated Grand Valley and Briarcliffe top Western Oregon’s 17-1 mark.) The Griffins relied on keeper Dallas McLellan to keep them in their last meeting, but even that wasn’t enough.  Look for a close game until the 4th quarter when Western Oregon puts it away. I was right about it being relatively close until the 4th. Just picked the wrong team to put it away. Final has the Griffins winning 20-15

#8 North Dakota State vs #9 SCAD – This is the game I’m most interested in in the second session. North Dakota State came out of nowhere this season and became a force to be reckoned with. SCAD is a perrenial SELC favorite. This one should be a barnburner. I expect it to be close until the very end. NDSU will pull this one off.  This one lived up to the billing. Even until the end. The bison entered the 4th with a 1 goal lead, 6-5, only to lose 10-8.

Thought I did pretty good in the first round. Let’s hope I have that same luck in the second.

Earlier in the day we showed you how the D1 side of things looks. Now we’ll break down the first round of D2 play in the 2011 MCLA National Championship. Like our D1 post, we’ll break down how we see the tournament going over the next few days. Overall, the field has two relative newcomers in North Dakota State and Hope College. Let’s get to the break down!
