Making the grade SLC Division 2

Making the Grade: SLC DII

0 - Published January 10, 2014 by in Commentary, Season Previews, SLC

Coming up over the next few weeks we are going to review the schedules of each MCLA conference and assign a grade to each team. Grades are determined by the opinions of current and former MCLA coaches, players and officials which are based on strength of opponents, travel schedule, perceived risks and home vs. away factors.

The following teams are ranked in order of how they are expected to finish in the conference. Grades and projected results are based on the average score of the participating LaxAllStars judges.

NORTH

Pepperdine University : 2013 (6 – 4)/(5 – 1)

B- | We feel that the Waves got robbed of 2013 playoffs with the Cal Lutheran forfeit which would have been an easy win and a 6-0 finish in the SLC. Redemption time is needed from the unfortunate end to last year. Tough last 3 games at home could hurt them going in to playoffs.

2/8 – Channel Islands (Home)*
2/15 – San Diego State (Home)
3/7 – Biola (Away)*
3/15 – Northern Arizona (Home)*
3/22 – Occidental (Away)*
3/29 – Cal St San Marcos (Away)
3/30 – Cal State Fullerton (Home)
4/6 – UC Irvine (Home)
4/12 – Claremont (Home)

Occidental College : 2013 (8 – 4)/(5 – 1)

B | Occidental could use some more D1 games. Most conference games are after the halfway point and this could prove troublesome without the right momentum. Longer schedule than Pepperdine is a huge factor, although they stay in California all season.

2/2 – Claremont (Away)
2/8 – Saint Marys (Home)
2/16 – UC Irvine (Away)
2/23 – Cal State Fullerton (Home)*
3/1 – Cal St San Marcos (Away)
3/2 – UC San Diego (Home)
3/22 – Pepperdine (Home)*
3/26 – Southern Oregon (Home)
3/30 – Northern Arizona (Home)*
4/5 – Biola (Away)*
4/19 – Channel Islands (Away)*

Northern Arizona University : 2013 (6 – 4)/(4 – 2)

B+ | A tough road stretch waits at the end of season containing all but one divisional game. They take on decent competition outside of their division and conference. We predict a solid third place finish in the conference, but don’t be surprised if they finish better.

2/1 – Grand Canyon (Away)
2/22 – Northern Colorado (Home)
2/22 – Biola (Home)*
2/23 – Metro State (Home)
2/28 – Fort Lewis (Home)
3/2 – New Mexico (Home)
3/15 – Pepperdine (Away)*
3/16 – Channel Islands (Away)*
3/29 – Marymount College (Away)+
3/30 – Occidental (Away)*
4/11 – Cal State Fullerton (Away)*
4/12 – Cal St San Marcos (Away)
4/19 – UC Irvine (Away)

Biola University : 2013 (4 – 13)/(3 – 3)

B- | Biola has a tough schedule all around. A longer schedule might prove troublesome again this year. The high level competition from previous years might have helped prepare for this year. This could be our possible SLC sleeper in 2014.

2/6 – Saint Marys (Home)
2/8 – Claremont (Home)
2/15 – Cal State Long Beach (Away)
2/21 – Northern Colorado (Away)
2/22 – Metro State (Away)
2/22 – Northern Arizona (Away)*
3/1 – UC San Deigo (Home)
3/7 – Pepperdine (Home)*
3/8 – Cal St San Marcos (Home)
3/15 – Channel Islands (Away)*
3/19 – Cal State Fullerton (Home)*
3/24 – Central Washington (Home)
3/28 – UC Santa Cruz (Home)
4/5 – Occidental (Home)*
4/11 – UC Irvine (Away)

California State University-Channel Islands : 2013 (3 – 8)/(2 – 4)

Channel Island Dolphins SLC

C+ | Channel Islands have a tough conference schedule beginning and ending with Pepperdine and Occidental respectively. The rest of the schedule has pretty good match-ups. The road stretch going into the end of the season might shake things up.

2/8 – Pepperdine (Away)*
2/15 – Cal St San Marcos (Home)
2/23 – UC Irvine (Home)
3/1 – Claremont (Home)+
3/15 – Biola (Home)*
3/16 – Northern Arizona (Home)*
3/22 – Cal State Long Beach (Away)
4/5 – UC San Diego (Away)
4/12 – Marymount College (Away)+
4/13 – Cal State Fullerton (Away)
4/19 – Occidental (Home)*

California Lutheran University : 2013 (2 – 6)/(2 – 4)

SOUTH

C | We can only assume that Concordia is still scheduling games. The coaching change might have negative effects, but as of now they are sporting a short schedule with little to no tough competition.

2/8 – Chapman (Away)+
2/15 – Loyola Marymount (Away)
3/8 – UC San Diego (Away)*
3/15 – Cal St San Marcos (Away)*
3/29 – Western Oregon (Home)
4/9 – UC Irvine (Away)*
4/19 – Whittier (Away)+

Cal State Fullerton : 2013 (15 – 5)/(4 – 1)

B | Fullerton’s divisional games are against mostly D2-North teams. They beat Biola and Occidental twice in 2013 so the schedule might be a cake walk unless they face Concordia.

2/8 – Cal State Long Beach (Home)*
2/23 – Occidental (Away)*
2/26 – USC (Away)
3/8 – Saint Marys (Away)
3/9 – San Jose State (Away)
3/15 – UC San Diego (Home)
3/19 – Biola (Away)*
3/25 – UC Santa Cruz (Home)
3/28 – Western Oregon (Home)
3/30 – Pepperdine (Away)
4/11 – Northern Arizona (Home)*
4/13 – Channel Islands (Home)

University of California-San Diego : 2013 (9 – 4)/(3 – 2)

B- | As of now they still have a short schedule, yet it has some great divisional match-ups. They very well might end up in second if Concordia has difficulties with scheduling and coaching changes.

2/21 – San Jose State (Home)
3/1 – Biola (Away)
3/2 – Occidental (Away)
3/8 – Concordia (Home)*
3/15 – Cal State Fullerton (Away)*
3/28 – Southern Oregon (Home)
4/4 – UC Irvine (Home)*
4/5 – Channel Islands (Home)
4/12 – Cal State Long Beach (Away)*
4/19 – Cal St San Marcos (Away)*

CSU – San Marcos : 2013 (7 – 5)/(2 – 3)

B- | San Marocs is rocking a tough schedule all around. A 3threegame road stretch at the start and end of season will prove difficult to build momentum. Schedule slightly longer than last year also a positive, but trying factor.

1/31 – Cal State Long Beach (Away)*
2/1 – UC Irvine (Away)
2/15 – Channel Islands (Away)
2/23 – San Jose State (Home)
3/1 – Occidental (Home)
3/8 – Biola (Away)
3/15 – Concordia (Home)*
3/29 – Pepperdine (Home)
4/2 – Saint Marys (Away)
4/4 – Pacific (Away)
4/6 – Cal St Monterey Bay (Away)
4/12 – Northern Arizona (Home)
4/19 – UC San Diego (Home)*

CSU – Long Beach : 2013 (2-6)/(1-4)

B- | The boys from the Long Beach have a short schedule with some tough competition. We like the gutsy move to play UNLV in Vegas. Winning a few conference games could really boost the program.

1/31 – Cal St San Marcos (Home)*
2/8 – Cal State Fullerton (Away)*
2/15 – Biola (Home)
2/22 – Claremont (Home)
3/2 – UC Irvine (Away)*
3/14 – UCLA (Away)
3/22 – Channel Islands (Home)
4/12 – UC San Diego (Home)*
4/19 – UNLV (Away)

University of California-Irvine : 2013 (2 – 7)/(0 – 5)

C- | The Eaters’ schedule seems too short as of now. SLC D2 teams are their only competition so far. They could use at least one D1 or out of conference game to spice things up. Way too safe, even for a school coming off a losing season.

2/1 – Cal St San Marcos (Home)*
2/16 – Occidental (Home)
2/23 – Channel Islands (Away)
3/2 – Cal State Long Beach (Home)*
4/4 – UC San Diego (Away)*
4/6 – Pepperdine (Away)
4/9 – Concordia (Home)*
4/11 – Biola (Home)
4/19 – Northern Arizona (Home)
