Making the grade SLC Division 1

Making the Grade: SLC DI

0 - Published January 11, 2014 by in Commentary, Season Previews, SLC

Coming up over the next few weeks we are going to review the schedules of each MCLA conference and assign a grade to each team. Grades are determined by the opinions of current and former MCLA coaches, players and officials which are based on strength of opponents, travel schedule, perceived risks and home vs. away factors.

The following teams are ranked in order of how they are expected to finish in the conference. Grades and projected results are based on the average score of the participating LaxAllStars judges.

NORTH

Chapman University: 2013 (13 – 6)/(6 – 0)

Chapman lacrosse

A | Just look at it! The schedule speaks for itself, a 19 game lineup against the best competition in the West. Chaptown takes on a ton of top ranked teams out of conference. We can’t wait for the season to start! With a schedule like that, it’s sink or swim.

2/8 – Concordia (Home)+
2/15 – Whittier (Home)+
2/21 – Colorado (Home)
2/22 – Boston College (Home)
2/28 – Grand Canyon (Home)
3/2 – Arizona State (Home)
3/7 – Sonoma State (Away)+
3/8 – Oregon State (Home)
3/13 – UCLA (Away)*
3/15 – USC (Home)*
3/22 – Colorado State (Home)
3/29 – Texas (Away)
3/30 – Texas State (Away)
4/4 – Loyola Marymount (Home)*
4/6 – UNLV (Home)*
4/9 – Claremont (Home)*
4/12 – Chico State (Home)
4/13 – Cal Poly (Away)
4/19 – UC Santa Barbara (Away)*

UC – Santa Barbara : 2013 (14 – 7)/(5 – 1)

UCSB Gauchos

A- | The Gaucho’s travel schedule is pretty light until a trip to Utah. They see a solid mix of quality teams, not too much to worry about on the road except BYU and Westminster, which should be close games. Will they be able to top Chapman this year? Maybe.

2/1 – USC (Away)*
2/8 – Stanford (Home)
2/14 – Georgia (Home)
2/16 – Cal Poly (Home)
2/22 – Sonoma State (Away)
2/23 – California (Away)
3/1 – UCLA (Away)*
3/2 – Grand Canyon (Home)
3/8 – Loyola Marymount (Home)*
3/11 – Virginia Tech (Home)
3/23 – UNLV (Away)*
3/24 – Westminster (Away)
3/26 – BYU (Away)
4/5 – Claremont (Home)*
4/19 – Chapman (Home)*

University of California–Los Angeles : 2013 (6 – 7)/(2 – 4)

George Buckley, Matt Gibson, UCLA Men's Lacrosse, New Coaches, Yale, Duke

B | We are excited for the Bruins, not only because of our own Kevin Rowen tearing it up, but they brought guys like Matt Gibson on to coach. They don’t see as much top notch competition, but we know they are still looking to add games. Expected to finish better than last year.

2/8 – San Diego (Away)
2/15 – Washington (Home)
2/16 – Stanford (Home)
2/22 – Cal Poly (Home)
3/1 – UC Santa Barbara (Home)*
3/8 – Claremont (Away)*
3/13 – Chapman (Home)*
3/14 – Cal State Long Beach (Home)
3/22 – California (Away)
3/30 – UC Santa Cruz (Home)
4/4 – UNLV (Home)*
4/12 – Loyola Marymount (Away)*
4/17 – USC (Home)*

University of Nevada-Las Vegas : 2013 (7 – 7)/(3 – 3)

B+ | We see some big competition on the horizon for the Rebels: BYU, CSU and ASU just to name a few of out of the marquee conference games. Getting a W in any of these games could speak volumes for the program. Go big or go home they said!

2/1 – BYU (Away)
2/7 – San Diego State (Away)
2/8 – USC (Away)*
2/9 – Claremont (Away)*
2/21 – Westminster (Home)
2/22 – Nevada-Reno (Home)
3/1 – Utah (Home)
3/8 – Arizona State (Home)
3/10 – Utah Valley (Home)
3/16 – Chico State (Home)
3/23 – UC Santa Barbara (Home)*
3/27 – Colorado (Away)
3/29 – Colorado State (Away)
4/4 – UCLA (Away)*
4/6 – Chapman (Away)*
4/13 – Loyola Marymount (Away)*
4/19 – Cal State Long Beach (Home)

Loyola Marymount University : 2013 (4 – 11)/(3 – 3)

C+ | Their schedule is definitely tame compared to last year. We would like to see a little more high end competition, even if they lose. Scheduling all the divisional games, except one, at the end of season might be a bad idea.

2/15 – Concordia (Home)
2/23 – Cal Poly (Away)
2/26 – Westminster (Home)
3/1 – San Diego State (Home)
3/4 – San Diego (Away)
3/8 – UC Santa Barbara (Away)*
3/14 – Virginia Tech (Home)
3/22 – Chico State (Home)
3/26 – Boise State (Home)
4/4 – Chapman (Away)*
4/8 – USC (Away)*
4/12 – UCLA (Home)*
4/13 – UNLV (Home)*
4/19 – Claremont (Home)*

The Claremont Colleges : 2013 (6 – 8)/(1 – 5)

C+ | Although it’s a bit longer, it’s still a decently weak schedule out side of conference. It looks like they scheduled a bunch of DII and weaker DI teams to get wins, not that there is anything wrong with boosting the W-L record.

2/2 – Occidental (Home)
2/8 – Biola (Away)
2/9 – UNLV (Home)*
2/15 – Santa Clara (Home)
2/17 – Washington State (Home)
2/22 – Cal State Long Beach (Away)
3/1 – Channel Islands (Away)+
3/2 – San Diego State (Home)
3/8 – UCLA (Home)*
3/11 – Utah Valley (Home)
3/26 – Western Oregon (Home)
3/29 – Boise State (Home)
4/2 – USC (Home)*
4/5 – UC Santa Barbara (Away)*
4/9 – Chapman (Away)*
4/12 – Pepperdine (Away)
4/19 – Loyola Marymount (Away)*

University of Southern California : 2013 (4 – 10)/(1 – 5)

D+ | The Trojans don’t have much in the way of competition. We know they could do a lot better when it comes to schedule length, we hope to see more road opponents.

2/1 – UC Santa Barbara (Home)*
2/8 – UNLV (Home)*
2/15 – Utah (Home)
2/16 – Washington State (Home)
2/26 – Cal State Fullerton (Home)
3/1 – Arizona (Home)
3/8 – San Diego State (Away)
3/15 – Chapman (Away)*
4/2 – Claremont (Away)*
4/8 – Loyola Marymount (Home)*
4/17 – UCLA (Away)*

SOUTH

Arizona State University : 2013 (18 – 3)/(3 – 1)

Arizona State university lacrosse

B+ | Well, the Sun Devils’ schedule is not as exciting as we’d hope for the powerhouse. The trip to Colorado will prove to be tough but the rest of quality D1 programs are at home. We wish the schedule looked a little more like Chapman or Texas, but we still expect BIG things.

2/15 – Stanford (Home)
2/16 – Utah (Away)
2/21 – Minn-Duluth (Home)
3/2 – Chapman (Away)
3/8 – UNLV (Away)
3/13 – Colorado State (Away)
3/15 – Colorado (Away)
3/19 – Sonoma State (Home)
3/22 – Simon Fraser (Home)
3/25 – Illinois (Home)
3/28 – San Diego (Away)*
4/5 – Arizona (Away)*
4/12 – San Diego State (Home)*
4/19 – Grand Canyon (Home)*

Grand Canyon University : 2013 (8 – 6)/(4 – 0)

B | The Lopes’ schedule could have a few games against some tougher competition. They took down big name teams or came close in 2013. We would have liked to see them up the stakes a bit more this year.

2/1 – Northern Arizona (Home)+
2/21 – Colorado State (Home)
2/23 – Minn-Duluth (Home)
2/28 – Chapman (Away)
3/2 – UC Santa Barbara (Away)
3/11 – New Hampshire (Home)
3/16 – Oklahoma (Home)
3/18 – Chico State (Home)
3/22 – San Diego State (Away)*
3/23 – San Diego (Away)*
3/25 – Washington (Home)
3/27 – Illinois (Home)
4/13 – Arizona (Away)*
4/19 – Arizona State (Away)*

University of Arizona : 2013 (10 – 6)/(2 – 2)

B+ | The Wildcats play some big name opponents in 2014, which is definitely more of a challenge than last year. The team is definitely going in the right direction, and they could very well be the SLC South sleeper.

2/14 – San Diego (Away)*
2/15 – Washington State (Home)
2/16 – Oregon State (Home)
3/1 – USC (Away)
3/9 – New Hampshire (Home)
3/13 – Westminster (Away)
3/15 – BYU (Away)
3/17 – Utah (Away)
3/20 – Simon Fraser (Home)
3/21 – Sonoma State (Home)
3/23 – Washington (Home)
4/5 – Arizona State (Home)*
4/11 – San Diego State (Home)*
4/13 – Grand Canyon (Home)*

San Diego State University : 2013 (12 – 5)/(1 – 3)

B+ | Taking on at least 6 high ranking opponents at home is impressive. The road schedule is a bit light, but they boast a quality first five games. Taking on tough ones in UT and AZ, they definitely didn’t shy away from competition. Again, another sleeper team to watch out for.

2/7 – UNLV (Home)
2/15 – Pepperdine (Away)
2/22 – BYU (Home)
3/1 – Loyola Marymount (Away)
3/2 – Claremont (Away)
3/8 – USC (Home)
3/12 – Utah Valley (Home)
3/18 – Oklahoma (Home)
3/20 – Colorado State (Home)
3/22 – Grand Canyon (Home)*
3/27 – Santa Clara (Home)
3/30 – Utah (Away)
4/1 – Utah State (Away)
4/5 – Montana (Home)
4/11 – Arizona (Away)*
4/12 – Arizona State (Away)*
4/18 – San Diego (Home)*

University of San Diego : 2013 (6 – 8)/(0 – 4)

C | They have a good season out of conference. The divisional games are spread out which will help them a little. We imagine they could pull off a winning record overall, but still should fall last in the SLC South.

2/8 – UCLA (Home)
2/14 – Arizona (Home)*
2/28 – California (Away)
3/1 – UC Davis (Away)
3/4 – Loyola Marymount (Home)
3/13 – Utah Valley (Home)
3/16 – Sonoma State (Home)
3/21 – Chico State (Home)
3/23 – Grand Canyon (Home)*
3/28 – Arizona State (Home)*
3/30 – Santa Clara (Home)
4/4 – Montana (Home)
4/18 – San Diego State (Away)*
