Griz Lacrosse Announces 2013 Schedule

The University of Montana Lacrosse Releases 2013 Schedule

Missoula, MT – The 2013 University of Montana Griz Lacrosse looks to build upon the competitiveness and experience of last year’s team paired with the addition of incoming talented freshman.

The team lost the 3-time Team MVP and 2nd Team PNCLL Midfielder Kent Davis to graduation along with Team Offensive Player of the Year Attackman Pat Shelso. Returning for this year’s squad is the outstanding defense of Goalie Hank Vieten, the Legion of Boom Defensemen Chuck Forsyth, Zack Barta and Honorable Mention PNCLL Cody Dems. Also returning are the Bash Brothers of the Midfield Honorable Mention PNCLL Henry Bishop and Andrew Wenlz.

The Grizzlies kick-off the season on February 23 with a trip west to face an up and coming Oregon State, a team they haven’t faced since a one goal loss back in 2010. Montana will then make their way to Beaverton, OR for a Sunday afternoon matchup against Portland State.

The beginning of March marks the first game against Utah State in Logan, UT. The next afternoon the Grizzlies look to change their fate when they face the Utes of Utah who last year delivered Montana a heart breaking one goal loss after taking a two goal lead into the 4th quarter.

The next weekend the Grizzlies make their way to in-state rival Montana State in Bozeman for the first of two games slated for the year. Last year they lost to the Bobcats twice by 4 points each. The next day March 9 they take on Div. II RMLC member, the Metro State Roadrunners.

Saturday March 16 is the first of a 3-game home stretch in Washington- Grizzly Stadium. Boise State is the first up and although the Broncos own the series lead 3-2 there have been three games decided by 2 goals or less which leads us to believe this year’s should be just as close.

The next weekend in Missoula, North Divisional foes Idaho and Washington State visit. Last year, Idaho had another one goal win, the second in two years. The resurgence of Washington State from last season has taught the Griz not to overlook the competitive Cougar team.

The first weekend of April is the third Spring Break Trip to California in as many years to face first time opponents of the WCLL, Stanford (April 2) and Santa Clara (April 4). Stanford starts the season as the 21st ranked team in the country and should provide quite the challenge. The Grizzlies look to make some strides in California and return to Montana with a couple of victories.

On April 20 the team makes their way north of the border to play PNCLL North foe, 24th ranked Simon Fraser. Last year, the Grizzles fell 20-15 with season high performances from Henry Bishop (6 g) and Patrick Shelso (4 a). On Sunday, Montana then travels back to the US to take on the Huskies of Washington. Look for another showdown in the return of the Griz players who hail from the state. The last game of the season will be in Washington-Grizzly stadium for the second and final game between bitter rivals Montana and Montana State.
