For Immediate Release - Sailfish Rout FIU in Season Opener, 19-9

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Despite a slow start to the 2012 season, Palm Beach Atlantic University followed through with an eleven goal run between the second and fourth quarters to ice away a 19-9 victory on Tuesday night against Florida International University.

Palm Beach Atlantic (1-0) fell early, conceding an early goal at 14:07, before tying the game at 9:27 off an unassisted goal from Joe Ciringione (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun). Florida International (0-1) battled throughout the first quarter with the Sailfish, but two goals from Dave Schultz (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s) and three more points from Ciringione gave PBA a 5-4 lead after one quarter.

At 13:25 of the second quarter, Palm Beach Atlantic grabbed a 6-4 lead with the second of six goals from Colin Price (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock), but it was short-lived. Three straight goals from the Golden Panthers, the last coming at the 7:09 mark, gave Florida International a 7-6 lead. PBA held possession for the remainder of the quarter, with goals from Bobby Hantske (Annapolis, MD/Southern) and Ryan Talks (Palm Beach, FL/St. Andrews) giving the ‘Fish an 8-7 lead at halftime.

In total, FIU committed eighteen penalties for 16 minutes of total penalty time throughout the course of the game and PBA was 8-for-18 (45%).

Throughout the midway point of the game, Palm Beach Atlantic buckled down defensively, shutting out the Golden Panthers over a period of 29:15 (including the entire third quarter).

In the second half, the Sailfish scored at will, with goals from Ryan Talks, Colin Price, and Bobby Hantske early in the third quarter. Two goals apiece from Price and Schultz expanded the lead to 15-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Freshman Dan Barry (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) started the scoring in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 16-7; Ciringione added another shortly thereafter.
The Vandals are back! Check out Sophomore Midfielder Colin Cain's first post of the 2012 season as the Vandals get ready for a couple trips to California.

My name is Colin Cain and I am a Laxoholic. After playing soccer and football during high school, I needed more to do. Convinced by my cousin I went for the trifecta and tried out for the lacrosse team. I started playing lax my senior year of high school for Boise High School where I immediately fell in love with the game and couldn’t let the rest of my life go lax free. So I headed up north and got on the University of Idaho lacrosse team to keep my career going and to help extend the career of the Mighty Vandies. I am a sophomore, captain, and middie for the team this year. We have got some great young guns on the team that will only help us as we get into the grind of our season, and for seasons to come.

___________________________________________________________

With the start of the spring semester up in Moscow, ID, came feet of snow. However, that did not stop the Vandal Lacrosse team from getting back on the grind! The Vandals are coming off a good fall ball season and look to build upon that, as well as build upon their previous year accomplishments of making it to the PNCLL Semi Finals.

The Vandals return almost all of their starters and have some freshman stepping into the spots of those that left. The team has been putting in the hard work already this season between conditioning practices and drills, fighting through the cold and snow.

They are preparing for their first games, a double header in sunny central California against UC Davis and San Jose St. Although the weather in California will be a tad different than in Moscow, they are confident they will be ready to get a great farmers tan.

Overall, all of the Vandies are excited for the season, as the team and fans feel they have a chance at another season of firsts. Don’t be surprised if you hear some noise from up in the Palouse this season!

MCLA teams are taking 2012 by storm. The University of Tennessee, Boston College, and now the University of Richmond have even gone as far as obtaining sponsorships from an apparel company out of Massachusetts. What's this mean for the growth of the MCLA?

__________________________________________________________________________________

Updated: This is pretty big news for Boston College, Tennessee, Richmond and the MCLA as a whole. When a popular apparel company has the choice between the plethora of sanctioned lax schools in the Northeast and along the Eastern seaboard or an MCLA school, most would think it’d choose the former based off their knowledge of lacrosse. I really like the combination of the big time SEC school and the Northeastern school, a great combination of a “traditional” lacrosse area combined with the popularity of big time football school. This is a great move by both schools and ’47 Brand.

I see it like this, there are 214 schools (95 D1, 119 D2) in the MCLA listed on LaxPower for this season, the majority of these schools are big time D1 schools where the participation and exposure for lacrosse is only growing. This makes a lot of the MCLA schools great candidates for companies like ’47 Brand who mind you, is a proud partner of MLB, the NFL, the NBA, and 600+ collegiate programs. Tennessee is definitely pushing the envelope on corporate sponsorship in the MCLA. Nicely done gentlemen!

What does this mean for the MCLA?

Do you think we will see more companies like ’47 Brand begin to branch out into the ranks of the MCLA?

Will school administrators take notice of this and consider possible moves to NCAA status?

If this does continue, is it possible for lacrosse to become the next big ‘money sport’?

For Immediate Release – 2012 University of Miami Men’s Lacrosse Season Preview

Miami, FL - Coming off its best season in team history, the University of Miami Men’s Club Lacrosse team looks to improve on its 8-5 record in 2012 with a fresh set of freshmen and transfers.

Last season, the team was able to withstand the loss of a number of key senior contributors en route to a very successful season. Starting six freshmen most games, including all three defensemen and a goalie, Miami became one of the surprises of the conference as the team was able to stay competitive with some of the regional powers.

“You know I think it was very successful, given our youth,” said Alex Schultes, head coach of the men’s lacrosse team.

The team competes in the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference, which is part of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association. Within the SELC, Miami is part of the Southeast Division, which includes in-state rivals University of Florida, Florida State University, University of South Florida and University of Central Florida.

Miami begins its quest for a third-straight winning season and a possible birth in the SELC tournament at 2 p.m. on Feb 12 against Florida Gulf Coast University. The game will be played at FGCU’s home field in Fort Meyers, Fla. Last season, FGCU upset Miami by a score of 17-16.

The team is entering is sixth competitive season as a member of the MCLA, posting a career record of 24-25. However, they are on the rise as of late, with a combined record of 14-9 over the past two seasons. Last season was highlighted by a win over division-rival South Florida, as well as impressive wins over the University of Nebraska and the University of Alabama. Miami also lost a thrilling double-overtime game against the University of South Carolina, a Top 25-ranked team, to conclude the season. The team suffered two lopsided losses to Florida State and Central Florida, continuing an unfortunate trend in the team’s young history. The team will have to reverse its fortunes this year if it hopes to make a postseason appearance.

The University of Florida always stands to be the marquee game of Miami’s conference season as the two teams have shared a number of close games over the years. Last season Miami opened up its season in front of more than 2,000 people at a local high school in a highly anticipated match-up with its fierce rival. While Miami led most of the first half, Florida was able to keep it close and eventually pulled away in the final quarter winning 14-9.

Schultes has marked this year’s game with Florida as one of the key games in the season. “One really exciting thing is that we actually catch the University of Florida for the first time since I’ve been coach, which is four years, in April towards the end of the season.”

This could give the team, which is once again dominated by young players, a chance to really click by the time this year’s big game comes around, Schultes said. He identified communication as the one thing the team needs to improve the most. This can be attributed, once again, to the team’s youth, especially with a number of freshmen and transfers who have never played together before.

“The communication already this year is a big improvement, like I feel like I know everyone on the team and we definitely didn’t have that last year,” said junior defenseman Steve Krawczyk. He notes that the leadership and attitude of this year’s team have contributed to all around improvements.

Both Schultes and Krawczyk have noticed the team’s depth, especially on the offensive side of the ball, has increased dramatically. The team will now be able to run multiple offensive lines, comprising mostly freshman, as opposed to the one or two the team struggled with last season. Although the team lost four-year starter Keith Ryan, who was twice named All-SELC, it has made up for it in depth.

“The great thing is, while we may lose one, two, three people, we’re gaining a lot in a very mature freshman class and a solid group of transfers,” said Schultes.

Some other highlights of the 2012 season include two major road trips, one to Tallahassee in the beginning of the reason and another to Atlanta later in the season.

“We really christen our SELC season with a three-game road trip up to Florida State, said Schultes. “We play three divisional powers in Florida State, a rematch with South Carolina from last year, and Georgia. You know after that weekend we’ll really know where we stand.” The games will be played at 6 p.m. on Feb. 17, 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 18 and 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 19 respectively.

Schultes has identified a birth in the SELC tournament as the goal for this year’s team, while Krawczyk hopes to put together a 10-win season, neither of which the team has ever accomplished. Schultes said it would take a major power shift in the division but he feels that it is a reasonable goal.

“It’s something we’ve worked over the past four years on and we’ve been inching forward to that. I think it’s very tangible and very within reach,” Schultes said.

We all have a passion to play this great sport, but is passion by itself enough to allow us to? Costs are still a roadblock for growth and we see it every year. How can we help others clear this obstacle?

We discovered this video from the Oklahoma State (LSA D2) squad down in Stillwater, OK. A Sports Media Major from the University put together a great piece on one of the bigger obstacles that is faced by all MCLA schools – the majority of their funds comes from the players and supporters of the team, with very little additional funding coming directly from the school.

In this case though, the Cowboys only receive $800 from the University to help fund their season – and that’s less than the majority of most teams’ individual player dues! With home games costing $550 a piece and up to $650 for each time they travel, the Cowboys had to make the move to D2 to help offset their costs. Things look to be getting better for OSU though, as they will play in 12 games this season, traveling throughout Texas and Oklahoma for six of them.

This brings up some very serious questions that many MCLA teams are faced with every year:

How are we going to field, and pay for, our team?

Is the team’s passion for lacrosse enough to get them through the season?

The cost to field a team in the MCLA is only increasing due to raising gas prices, increases in ref fees, and just trying to outfit your team with gear and uniforms. Add in the value (and cost) of traveling to play other competitive teams and multiple road trips, and costs can spiral out of control quickly.

The light in all of this though, is that there are 211 other schools between D1 and D2 that have experienced, and hopefully overcome, the same, or very similar, problems.

Since we don’t believe in just complaining, let’s offer up some help to our fellow MCLA laxers, shall we?!?!?!

How does YOUR team help to offset the ever-rising costs of ref fees, lacrosse pads, travel, jerseys, lacrosse helmets, and everything else it takes to play a full season of our of favorite game?

Taking the time out to drop a comment on this post could be the difference maker for another MCLA squad out there. Let’s do what we can to Grow The Game right here!

With the season finally underway, you can guarantee more and more MCLA content on everything from gear photos and team highlights to press releases on who will be leading each team to their 2012 goals. Here is a little sampler to keep you going through the week. Some videos, some light reading, we are always thinking of you.

Let’s start off with a little Auburn (SELC D1) news IN the Auburn News.

Things are looking good down in Auburn for the Tigers as they will face off against Tennessee on February 4th in their first MCLA match-up. Speaking of the Volunteers, check out this preview video posted the other day.

Out west, BYU is preparing to try and top what they accomplished last year – no easy task by any means. Check out the full preview at BYULacrosse.com. Here is a little sneak peek for you.

“We are excited about our schedule this season,” said Head Coach Matt Schneck. “The majority of our games are going to be played on the road, but we are ready for the challenges and opportunities we will face. We are going to work hard to defend the national title.”

The BYU Men’s Lacrosse team, currently ranked No. 1 in preseason polls, won the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association National Championship in May 2011 in Denver and will face a season full of nationally ranked teams.

The Cougars begin their season at home on Feb. 9, where they will host the UNLV Rebels. The next day they hit the road to play two games in Boise, Idaho – Boise State on Feb. 10 and No. 18 Simon Fraser of British Columbia on Feb. 11. Both away games will be played in the afternoon and on the famous Smurf Turf of Bronco Stadium.

Always love to see what the Cougars are up to, a top notch program, run by a top notch Head Coach in Matt Schneck.

News from the UMLL D1, Minnesota-Duluth has announced their team captains for the 2012 season. The Bulldogs will look to improve off their 7-8 season last year that ended in a first round loss to Colorado State at Nationals. See the press release below.

Bulldogs Name Team Captains
By UMD Media Relations
The UMD Bulldogs name four captains to lead their team for the 2012 lacrosse season

The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs named their captains for the 2012 lacrosse season. The Bulldogs officially began practicing for the season January 14, 2012. Captains for the upcoming season are senior Drake Peterson, senior Matt Madden, senior Mike Becken and senior Joey Slattery.

“I am very impressed with the leadership this group of captains has put forth. The four of them make up one of the strongest group of captains I have seen in my years with this program. They exemplify the work ethic that is the heart of what we do as a team. ,” said Bulldogs assistant head coach, Sam Litman.

When asked about the upcoming season and the competition they are going to face, each captain is highly enthusiastic about the team’s capabilities, even with the grueling schedule ahead.

From L to R: Sr Mike Becken, Sr Joey Slattery, Sr Matt Madden, and Sr Drake Peterson.

Drake Peterson, an Ohio native, has been with the Bulldogs for three years. Peterson says, “Our team is extremely experienced. Our greatest strength is our teams’ overall athleticism and speed.” Peterson also emphasized the players’ abilities to play different roles on the team and do so “at a very fast pace.”

For Matt Madden, it’s his fourth year on the team. Playing middie, he feels the teams’ strength lies with the goalie and the overall defense. “Our attack unit is very strong, which helps a lot,” Madden said.

Returning All-American Defenseman Mike Becken who has been with the Bulldogs for four years also believes in the team’s strong defense. “Along with the seniors, we have a very talented young group of guys that compliment the senior class well,” said Becken.

As of current preseason rankings, the Bulldogs play seven of the top twenty teams. According to the Bulldogs schedule, they play six of those games within a 15-day time span. Currently, the Bulldogs are ranked #15 in the nation by Lacrosse Magazine and #16 by the Inside Lacrosse coaches poll.

In order to keep a strong defense, the team needs to take extra strides to stay healthy this season.

“I believe our biggest challenge this season is our schedule. We have to make sure we stay healthy, and continue to work extra hard on and off the field,” said Becken. “We probably have one of the toughest schedules in the whole country,” agrees Joey Slattery, who has played for the Bulldogs for three years. Slattery is a returning two-time All-American Goaltender. Slattery also has high expectations for his team. “With our strong defense, we should be able to hold the top teams to very few goals, hopefully,” said Slattery.

Each of the Bulldogs captains finds it a privilege and honor to be named leaders for their team. “Especially when we’ve been chosen by our teammates,” said Slattery.

Assistant coach Litman said,“I’ve enjoyed watching all of these players grow over the past years, and it is exciting to see how far they have come. Most of all, I can’t wait to see where they can lead this team.”

Head coach Clark added “these guys have great intangibles and that has been recognized by their teammates and our staff. They set great examples for their teammates both on and off the field”

The Bulldogs open their regular season on February 18th against Marquette University at Vandais Sports Center. On February 19th, they face off against Iowa State University.

“Andrew, Nick and Tim are great leaders – on and off the field,” said Head Coach Brian Krautler. “They embody what it means to be Coast Guard Academy cadets and I’m more than confident in their ability to lead this year’s team. 2012 is a big year for us, we sent a great deal of talent from the Class of 2011 out to the fleet, but we have a talented and experienced group of 1/c cadets that are hungry to compete and win a championship. We also have a number of younger players who will have to fill holes and play prominent roles for us in 2012,” Krautler noted. “The leadership our three captains provide will be essential to the growth and success of our team this year and our staff could not be more pleased with the selection of these young men as our team captains. These cadets know being a captain is an important responsibility and this group is looking forward to leading this year’s team and representing our program, the Coast Guard Academy and the Coast Guard.”

“One of the most unique aspects of the Coast Guard Academy, and the reason I love coaching at such a place, is that the school develops leaders of character. All seven of our seniors are a product of this leadership training, and indeed, are all outstanding leaders. Clearly, our team not only looks to our captains for guidance, but looks to the entire senior class for guidance. It makes for a team atmosphere that I am honored to be a part of.”

Cadet 1/c Andrew Breen has been an integral part of the Bears’ defense for the last three years roaming the pitch as a long stick midfielder (LSM). His defensive prowess last year earned him 2011 PCLL 2nd Team All-Conference LSM. He spent his summer training period aboard USCGC STINGRAY, an 87-foot Coastal Patrol Boat out of Mobile, AL before reporting to Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM to finish out his training. Aboard STINGRAY, he worked on Damage Control and Officer of the Deck qualifications. While underway, he participated in law enforcement boardings and search and rescue cases in the Gulf of Mexico. At Sandia, Breen worked in the Robotics Laboratory and got great hands-on experience in engineering design. A leader on and off the field, Breen organized a team fundraising effort in 2011 that raised more than $1,100 for the LT John M. Senyard Endowment. A Mechanical Engineering major, Breen has also excelled in the classroom where he was named a 2011 MCLA Scholar-Athlete. He continued that success this past fall, registering a 3.88 GPA and a ranking in the top 4 percent of his class. He is currently serving as the Regimental Morale Department Head. Breen became the 3rd member of the Mike Fredie “Hard Hat” Union with 10 ground balls vs. Stonehill College on April 09, 2011.

Cadet 1/c Andrew Breen

Cadet 1/c Nicholas Zablotny, a proud member of the “Old Bay Crew” (the sobriquet for our Maryland player contingent), has been a mainstay of the Bears offense the last two years. The midfielder notched a career-high 16 points last season, as well as scooping 22 ground balls. Zablotny spent a portion of his summer as an intern at the National Security Agency (NSA) before reporting aboard USCGC SYCAMORE, a 225-foot Seagoing Buoy Tender out of Cordova, AK to finish out his training program. Like Breen, Zablotny has also found success off the field and achieved a 3.88 GPA for the fall semester. An Electrical Engineering major, he is ranked in the top 7 percent of his class in overall order of merit which factors in both academics and military performance. He is currently serving on the Bravo Company staff. Interestingly, Zablotny’s Electrical Engineering Senior Design Project involves designing and building a dynamic positioning system – a platform that will maintain its position in the water, mimicking the systems on certain vessels and oil drilling platforms.

Cadet 1/c Nicholas Zablotny

Cadet 2/c Tim Wyderko is the anchor of the Bears defense and earned the rare honor of selection as a team captain as a junior. “Tim is an excellent one on one defender with great intuition,” said Coach Krautler. In 2011, Wyderko’s on-field exploits netted him PCLL 2nd Team All-Conference Defensemen honors. He started his summer with the Cadet Aviation Training Program and was exposed to Coast Guard aircraft and missions at the Aviation Training Center in Mobile, AL. He also had the opportunity to sail around New England with classmates and Head Lacrosse Coach, LCDR Brian Krautler, as part of the Coastal Sail Training Program. He finished up his summer training period serving as Cadre and running the newly arrived Class of 2015 through “Swab Summer” – the initial boot-camp style indoctrination period. He is a Government major and served as the Information Systems Officer last semester. Wyderko became the 2nd member of the Mike Fredie “Hard Hat” Union with 10 ground balls vs. University of New Haven on March 27, 2011.

Cadet 2/c Tim Wyderko

The Bear’s pre-season preparations got underway upon returning from Holiday Break in early January. The team’s first contest of 2012 will take place on Saturday, February 25th at 1:00 PM versus Southern Connecticut State University at Veteran’s Memorial Park in West Haven, CT. Next up, the Bears will travel to Palm Beach, FL from 2-6 March, where they will host a Diversity Open House for the local BRIDGE (Building Relationships to Initiate Diversity, Growth and Enrichment) affiliate and face Palm Beach Atlantic, Grand Valley State, Elon and Emory, in the 2012 Sailfish Shootout.

As the smallest of the five U.S. service academies, the Coast Guard Academy offers the elite higher education, rigorous professional development, and honor and tradition of a military academy but with a more personalized approach.

The Coast Guard Academy offers an integrated life experience which emphasizes academics, physical fitness, character and leadership, in order to graduate officers of the highest caliber. Graduates go directly to positions of leadership in “The Shield of Freedom,” one of the most admired organizations in the world. The Academy also features an impressive teacher-student ratio and picturesque waterfront campus that instills a traditional small college feel.

Cadets devote themselves to an honor concept and graduate to work at sea, on land, in the air, and even in space, in meaningful careers of selfless service to others.
