Fall Ball Report: Texas State University

0 - Published November 21, 2011 by in College

Editor’s note: After the success of our “Growing the Program” series last year, we knew we had to follow up with another league-wide update. So, this Fall we’re hitting the streets in search of new information about teams around the MCLA. We’re asking questions about try-outs, players to watch, team promotion, coaching changes and everything this side of the Mississippi. With that, here come our Fall Ball Reports!

Each report will feature a different MCLA team, touching on the importance of Fall Ball and anticipation of the 2012 season – which is just a few months away!

Today we’re speaking with Coach Christopher Figueroa of Texas State University.

MCLA Fan: How many players attended team tryouts this Fall?

Coach Figueroa: 43.

What is your team’s Fall practice schedule?

We practice on the field Tuesday and Wednesday and the guys have a mandatory Rec Practice on Thursdays focusing on stick skills, conditioning, and weight training.

What is your team’s Fall game/tournament schedule?

We’ll be playing Texas, and St. Edwards in scrimmages. We’ll also be taking part in the Southwestern Tournament and the A&M Fall Tournament.

What aspect(s) of your team do you hope to most improve upon from last year?

We had a young defense and not a lot of depth. We’re hoping this year we can get some guys back from injury and really get back into the flow with our defense. We like playing an up tempo on both sides of the ball and have an aggressive defense, but with injuries it hurt us at the end of the season. We want to get that tempo and aggressiveness back.

Who are the top 5 players we should be paying attention to this season?

Clark Dansby # 4, Junior Midfielder

Andy Uhl # 32, Sophomore Attackman

William Laurel # 7, Sophomore Goalie

Kenneth Raney #2, Junior LSM

Harrison Parr # 36, Senior Midfielder

Have there been any changes to your coaching staff? If so, please fill us in…

Chris Park, last year’s Head Coach has stepped down to focus on his career and his family.

Associate Head Coach Christopher Figueroa has taken over as Head Coach.

Assistant Coach Kevin Clark has been promoted to Associate Head Coach.

Mark Albers a graduating player, is now an Assistant Coach

Former Player Mike Zdonczik has joined the staff as an Assistant Coach

Former Player Devan Gallagher has joined the staff as a Graduate Assistant

What are you doing to promote your program on campus and in the community?

We are planning on some low cost clinics that we can help promote the school and give guys the opportunity to earn money towards their dues. Our hope is to have a clinic in Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. We’re also looking to setup a can food drive for one of our games to help out the area food bank.

What are your program’s top 3 goals for the upcoming 2012 season?

1. Win the Lone Star Alliance

2. Make it back to Nationals

3. Team – we’re promoting our team on and off the field. We want our guys to realize that some of their best friends in life are playing right next to them and we want them to leave it on the field for each other.

Thanks so much for speaking with us Coach Figueroa. Good luck this season!
