Editor’s note: After the success of our “Growing the Program” series last year, we knew we had to follow up with another league-wide update. So, this Fall we’re hitting the streets in search of new information about teams around the MCLA. We’re asking questions about try-outs, players to watch, team promotion, coaching changes and everything this side of the Mississippi. With that, here come our Fall Ball Reports!
Each report will feature a different MCLA team, touching on the importance of Fall Ball and anticipation of the 2012 season – which is just a few months away!
Today we’re speaking with Coach Grubb of Clemson.
MCLA Fan: How many players attended team tryouts this Fall?
Coach Grubb: 65.
What is your team’s Fall practice schedule?
3 nights a week; Mon, Tues, Thurs, 7-9 pm.
What is your team’s Fall game/tournament schedule?
9/25 – Wofford College
10/9 – Georgia State
10/23 – Georgia & Piedmont
11/5&6 – Southern Comfort Tournament at Clemson: South Carolina, North Carolina (club), SCAD, Col of Charleston, Kennesaw, the Citadel
What aspect(s) of your team do you hope to most improve upon from last year?
Not necessarily improvement but our priority for fall will be to develop new defensive unit; graduated both top keeps and 2 starters at close; pieces are there to pick up between returnees and new talent; offensively we return 110% from last year with return of player who co-oped in ’11 who brings back more points than we lost to graduation. expect potent offense and young but talented defense and more quality depth at midfield; significantly upgraded 2012 schedule with 6 opponents in MCLA Top 25; March trip to Colorado to play the Buffs and UNH.
Who are the top 5 players we should be paying attention to this season?
Will Patch, SR, A, 2: hon mention MCLA AA; leading scorer past 3 yrs.
Chris Beuchele, SR, A, 20: all conference, all tournament, 2nd leading scorer in 2011
James McLaughlin: SR, A 12; 30 points in ’11 in 6 games before ACL; transfer from Nassau CC where starter on attack
Ryan Conlon: JR, M, 8: 1st team All Conf; went from 1 assist as freshman to 26 as soph.
John Kilbourne: SR, M, 43: 35 goals in 2011, all conference
Have there been any changes to your coaching staff? If so, please fill us in…
Asst Coach Pat Chaney is no longer with program; added alumnus Andy Campbell as assistant defensive coach and box coach; Asst Mike French moving to defensive coordinator.
What are you doing to promote your program on campus and in the community?
Participating in clinics, coaching youth teams, playing “home” games in Greenville, SC (site of 2012/13 MCLA Nationals); continuing dialogue with Clemson athletic department, very active and supportive Parents Booster Club, focusing on conducting ourselves in a mature fashion and giving University no reason to find fault with how we represent Clemson.
What are your program’s top 3 goals for the upcoming 2012 season?
1) To exceed 2012 success (14-2 record, #15 ranking, conference championship runner-up)
2) Win SELC Championship
3) Qualify for and contend for MCLA National Championship
Thanks so much for speaking with us Coach Grubb. Good luck this season!
