Clemson Releases 2012 Men’s Lacrosse Schedule
Clemson, SC: The Clemson Men’s Lacrosse Team will face 7 non-conference opponents and 5 teams who qualified for the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) National Championships en route to the 2013 postseason this spring. Clemson’s 2013 regular season kicks off with a scrimmage with Limestone College in Greenville, SC on Sunday, February 3rd and concludes on Friday, April 19 with its traditional rivalry game with South Carolina.
“Our team Vice-President, Kyle Stinchcomb, put a lot of work into developing this schedule and it has paid off, “ said Clemson head coach Buff Grubb. “We’ve got a balanced home and away slate and with 5 teams who played in Greenville last May, we’ve got plenty of challenges ahead. We’re particularly excited about the out of conference games against teams such as Pitt, Purdue, SUNY Buffalo, and Boston University, but we don’t really need to go outside the SELC (SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference) to be tested. SELC conference games include traditional powers such as defending champion Virginia Tech, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, NC State, and South Carolina.”
A highlight of the 2013 season will be a mid-April trip to Maryland to play Michigan State and Connecticut. “We’re really looking forward to our trip to Maryland. We have more players from Maryland than any other state on our roster and the majority of our squad hails from the mid Atlantic and north,” says Grubb. “It’ll be great to bring Clemson lacrosse to our player’s families for a change rather than them having to travel down south all the time. Plus, Maryland is underexposed, so to speak, in terms of the MCLA and it’s our hope that we can show off some quality MCLA lacrosse in that part of the country. We hope this will be the start of something of an annual tradition.”
Virginia Tech will join Clemson, Connecticut, and Michigan State in Maryland.
2012 MCLA tournament teams Clemson will face include SUNY Buffalo, Pitt, Michigan State, Davenport, and Virginia Tech.
The Tigers finished the 2012 season with a 15-6 record, highlighted by a trip west to Boulder, Colorado, during which they swept 3 games and rose to a #11 ranking in the MCLA. Clemson is led by a senior class that has amassed a 3 year record of 39-11. “We expect that our senior leadership will be a significant contributor to our success in 2013,” said Grubb. “Our older guys have had a lot of success during their 3 years at Clemson but a conference championship and appearance in the MCLA Nationals have eluded them, so there still is a hunger there. If we are successful with this schedule, we should be well prepared come May when the MCLA Championships return to Greenville. We’re looking forward to the chance to play close to home, given that Greenville is 45 minutes from campus.”
